Noticed that a Kenyan site with a decently sized audience has let their domain expire, i’m having evil thoughts lol
Holding people's domains hostage after they let them expire and making them pay a fee to release it.
Why would you get in legal trouble? Once a domain expires and is up for sale, you can legally buy it and then sell it to the original owners if they still want it
Yeah but I’ve heard of people in the US getting sued for this, I don’t know how it works here
There is a timeframe for which an expired domain can still be legally owned by the previous owner, but in Kenya I haven’t seen anything of the sort.
once it is in the market no one can sue you for it , take it , it’s called cyber squatting , I have several clients who have lost their domains this way despite me warning them , pia KQ lost their domain like this , the shit heads !

You can register but they can sue for trademark infringement if the domain includes a trademarked name (eg safaricom) and you try to use it deceptively

From expiry to actual delete, the point at which a third party can now buy it, is about 2 months. You can renew it at any point during this period at whatever price your registrar decides to quote you. The first 14 days after expiry the price is kawa
