SIMON Group, the company that runs rapid transit buses, UDART, is under receivership. This comes as the result of the Group to default a June 2008 debenture issued by TIB Development Bank.

The amount of debenture was not specified. The lender today issued a notice that appointed Ayoub Mtafya and Nuhu Sadiki Mkumbukwa both of NexLaw Advocates as joint administrative receivers (JAR) of Simon Group.

“…our powers include but not limited to taking possession of all assets and undertaking of the company [Simon], collecting income from the assets and where necessary dispose the assets,” NexLaw notice reads.

The receivers said by the virtue of the company being under receivership the powers of the directors in term of dealing with the assets of the firm ceased. “No one other than the JAR is authorized to receive any money due to the company or to deal with the assets of the company,” the statement said.

Simon Group won the tender to operate Dar es Salaam Rapid Transit (DART) system that has a total length of 130.3 km, 18 terminals and 228 stations. The group also bought Usafiri Dar es Salaam (UDA) company three years ago.

The deal raised eyebrows as the value of UDA was alleged underestimated.

Imagine, jamaa wabahili, most of these Bongos can’t survive in Nairobi aki. Washazoea daladala chafu ambazo wao hulipia nauli ya 300Tshs, ukiwaletea vyombo vya kisasa vyenye ustaarabu ambavyo unafaa ulipie wanalalamika hadi kuzimu.
