You know what surprises me the most? Kuna kathread hapa tu mahali some guy has been going on about how some shiny eye imemshinda kufkuza kwa nyumba. And I noticed a number of people, mostly shiny eyes, exclaiming vile the guy atatendwa kama hayuko careful. It was almost made in a manner to suggest that the bad things were actually a preserve of shiny eyes and to a great extent and judging from how the talkers were beaming with joy, a good trait. Sahii hapa tena naona watu wakizusha ati shiny eye wanaonewa. Someone humor me with how these things work… Yani you can turn from beaming with joy at how shiny eyes are wrong numbers kwa vitu fulani to complaining about how… Sielewi sincerely. Munatakanga aje watu?

:D:D:D:Dconflicted but you just made my day

The lady full story

What is your must have on a normal day?

For GLADYS KAMANDE it is:

  1. Oxygen Concentrator,
  2. 2 Oxygen Gas Cylinders,
  3. A Generator &
  4. A white cane.

Yes she carries them wherever she goes because her life entirely depends on them. Too much for the air we breath freely, but for her it costs an arm and a leg.

Gladys’ both lungs have collapsed. She has turned blind as well. Kindly let me take you through her story as shared to me:
………………………………………………………

"After God blessed me with my first born in 1999, my husband and I came to Nairobi in Mwiki, Kasarani. That was in the year 2000. I got pregnant again in the same year but due to complications I was operated on and they found out that it was ectopic and I lost the pregnancy.

5 more pregnancies after that and the result was the same. I was not lucky to carry pregnancy to full term due one reason or another.

Nikapata mimba ingine. Siku moja ni kama mzee wangu alikuwa amekasirika na mimi. Alinirushia mguu akanigonga kwa tumbo. Kunigonga nikaanza tena ku-bleed. Akaniambia, wewe utafanya hivi juu unanipenda, usiambie mama yako. Akanipeleka hospitali nikalazwa. Nikaambiwa nitapelekwa theatre nitolewe huyo mtoto kwa maana alikuwa amekaa vibaya.

I also had to undergo another surgery because something was left in the womb during previous surgery.

Nimetolewa mtoto lakini nimeanza kugonjeka. Nikarudi theatre wakaniambia wamepata kakitu walikuwa wamebakisha kwa tumbo.

After a few months the complications returned and my mother recommended a specialist who upon going to see him told that I had to get an X-ray to determine once and for all what was ailing me. And shortly after he told me that my appendix was the problem and had to be operated on for the yet another time.

Besides dealing with my body’s distress I occasionally had to encounter frustrations from some of my relatives.

Kuna siku sister in law alikuja kwa hospitali akaniuliza, tena uko huku? Nikamwambia ee. Akaniuliza kwa nini hukufa na ninaona mortuary iko hapa inakungojea?

After some time I got pregnant again and carried it for about six months where upon a routine screening I was informed that the baby had died in my womb. I started dying slowly inside.

A blood clot

I went back to my job of selling vegetables and I thought life would now be ok. But in 2010 the complications came back and upon going to the hospital I was referred to Kenyatta National Hospital. They found out that I had a clot near my heart. I was operated on and stayed in the ICU for ten days and as my condition got better I was transferred to the ward.

Lost eyesight

When I recovered I opened my eyes but could not see anything, I heard my mother’s voice and asked her what was happening, I could not see yet my eyes were opened. A nurse explained to me that I lost my eyesight while undergoing the operation. I was confused. why was this happening to me? I tried waking up but couldn’t, I could not feel my left side, I was paralyzed so I could not walk.

With the unending troubles my husband deserted me.

On the day I was discharged we were told to go back to hospital after a week for checkup. I was taken back by my husband, brother and uncle. Upon reaching there my husband opted to get a wheel chair as my brother queued in the line. He never returned till date. Anytime I tried reaching him he couldn’t pick until a lady picked one day told me “wachana na bwana yangu”.

Sick and blind, my husband walked out on me.

In December last year I got sick again, went to a local hospital and the doctor told me that I had typhoid, but after giving me drugs I still was not getting well. In January I opted to seek treatment at Kenyatta hospital and it was found that I had a blood clot in my chest and heart. I was treated and while in the ward I got worse and had to be rushed to the ICU, treated and later taken to the ward and again back to the ICU and back to the ward.

Lungs collapse.

When the doctor came to see me I could feel i

in his voice that he had bad news, and he did. He told me that my lungs had collapsed and had a clot in both my head and heart. I was devastated.

They told me that I can’t be operated locally upon which they gave me a letter to be treated abroad.

Since my lungs collapsed I had to buy an oxygen concentrator that costed Kshs.450,000. I could not raise the money for both the machine and the medical bills since my NHIF card could not settle the whole bill and had to do a harambee. My Member of Parliament Hon. John Njoroge Chege also came to my rescue and donated 500,000 Kshs and I was discharged.

I use the machine all the time.

I found a hospital abroad and the cost is 7 million Kshs and knowing that I could not raise it I knew I would eventually die but a former councilor by the name of John Kibue came to see me and told me that he would help me seek funds. He is God sent. My daughter used to carry the oxygen cylinder for me as we went for checkups with the help of taxi operaters.

No, you will die in my car!

But something happened one day. We asked a taxi to pick us at our house in Mwiki. When the taxi guy came, we got the oxygen concentrator, oxygen gas cylinders and a generator and were about to put them in the car when he quipped, “Mama hizi zote ni zako?” I told him yes. He responded, “Na ukaweza kufia kwa gari yangu si ni kesi utaniachia? Sio kwa ubaya lakini sitaki kujiletea shida”. And he drove off.

Our friend Kibue now takes me to hospital in his car for checkups anytime I need to.

If I had the funds I’d have MECHANICAL LUNGS RECONSTRUCTION to enable unaided respiratory mechanism on my body. Doctors at ARTEMIS INTERNATIONAL HOSPITAL (Delhi) INDIA have also mentioned there is a high possibility of regaining eyesight.

I plead with anyone who is reading my story to help me renew my hope. Please support with whatever amount through:

And that was my 5 hour interview with Gladys, punctuated with pauses, to allow her gulp in some amount of her valuable oxygen. Quite amouthful story, isn’t it? My colleague Essie Kanyi cried through out the interview session.

Is it possible to gift her this Christmas? Yes, a gift of a new her, free of oxygen concentrator, oxygen cylinders, generators and white cane?

Kshs. 7M stands between her and treatment at Artemis hospital and for sure it’s such a substantial amount. But if you and I contributed a portion it would make a whole difference. I have purposed to forego my lunch today. All that I’ll give towards GLADYS MEDICAL TREATMENT. Please support me with a little sacrifice.

With just a few clicks, you can help SHARE the story of GLADYS KAMANDE with people around the world! Let everyone become part of her journey to recovery.

I remember that lady she was on TV . Her situation really humbled me. :frowning: It’s hectic for her, especially when she talked about the situation when it comes to electricity/power failures.
