Last week or 2 weeks ago Kiambu gov YT2 renewed Del Monte’s lease of about 8000 acres for 99 years. Del Monte “surrendered” 635 acres to Kiambu Country to do what they want to with it. I put surrendered in quotes because senator Kimani Wamatangi rejects the term because it implies that Del Monte owns the land. They don’t because it was always on leasehold. I have to agree with him on that. Senator Wamatangi also feels YT2 should have consulted other stakeholders before rushing to sign that lease renewal. I agree. Kiambu people should have withheld more land before renewing the lease. But 635 acres is better than nothing.

Anyways Murang’a county which has a more demanding governor is demanding 3,000 acres before it signs a lease renewal. Del Monte has 14, 000 acres in Murang’a County with the rest 8, 000 acres in Kiambu.
Arrogant Del Monte is fighting back in the courts. Can you believe the arrogance of this company? The tenant is fighting the landlord to renew his lease under his terms.
I hope Murang’a people win and get their 3,000 acres that they seem to have settled for. In 2015 the Murang’a people were demanding 6,000 acres.
Gov Wa Iria wants to use that 3,000 acres for a resort city while senator Kang’ata wants university and hospital and other facilities. The bottom line is the Murang’a people seem united in the 3,000 acre annexation. That’s good.
Fucking retards changing perfectly arable land to a concrete jungle. The counties are joined hand in hand in fucking multinational corporations, the same is being replicated in Nakuru and Kericho
Hizi lease za 99 yrs zilitoka wapi max time should be 10yrs
Come on. Wouldn’t you wish hospitals and universities be built? All the hawkers need places where they can trade. We need markets and industrial zones. We need a Gikombaa type of market in every county
I’m on the side of the people on this one.
Land is always a controversial subject, land is also a factor of production. Long time ago I decided never to fight family over it. Besides 6 by 4 inatungoja sote mahali. Nice read though:D:D:D:D:D:D
The thing here is this. Del Monte got the land on leasehold. They got it in 1965 when Kenya’s population was less than 15M. Now we’re 3 times that number. I don’t think it’s unreasonable for Kiambu and Murang’a people want to keep some of that land for county development. It’s their land. I’m curious to see what others think
Have we utilised the existing land to the maximum? Why are we interested in the land that is being productively used?
Waititu is a retard.
Kiambu County government doesn’t have idle land. Tiny Kiambu has over 1 million people. Land is desperately needed
Negros will turn the land it into a slum.
That’s not the issue for me these 3000 acres will end up being owned by a few individuals in the long run.
In EMC the county government failed to renew the lease for the company mining flourspar at Kerio Valley, the company withdrew, and the effect are being felt all over the area.
Do you have examples of that ama it’s your self hate coming through again?
The americans can go drying back to California…
I will tell you a story @Tarantinoh - In the early days of Del Monte in .ke they were involved in tax evasion by selling all their production to their mother company at prices that showed they were not making any money. when the government caught on they claimed kenya pineapples were not doing too well coz they were not sweet enough…when that was disputed too they changed the story to that the pineapples were too sweet for sugar conscious fist world markets…
Can you really call it a landlord-tenancy agreement? Many plots even the ones we buy have a 99year lease hold, with the assumption of “automatic” renewal upon expiry.
@patco njoo hapa uone the real owners of Kenya. 22,000 acres of prime land na huwezi jua.
Kibera, Mathare, Dandora basically any place negros decide to inhabit turns to shit. Karen, Kileleshwa and Lavington were set aside for whites but once blacks started moving in the aesthetics and status were lost.
You really don’t think things are different in today’s Kenya when it comes to land grabbing? I think we have turned the corner on that one.
Why not upgrade the existing health centre, e.g. the District hospital still has colonial wings, and the health centres are still at the same condition.
Okay that’s new information, if the beberus are avoiding taxes, why shouldn’t a local enterprise take over the land and farm? Employing locals and earning the government much needed taxes.
The county governments of Nandi and Kericho want the tealand companies to give up land for building. Counties have turned into the scrounge of the country.
