Gov Sonko - Rehabilitation of former Kangemi dumpsite to a recreation centre

The new look Kangemi recreational center that was previously being used as an illegal dumpsite.

Nairobi County staff are doing final touches at the facility before its officially opened for kids.

As promised my administration will convert all illegal dumpsites into modern playing fields for our children.

Good initiative which should be encouraged. One of the things we don’t take into consideration with some of these dump sites is the effects they have on the publics health. I believe there is a strong correlation between ground water, dumping and cancer in Kenya

While the cause is 100% noble, for something kids will use, the workmanship and ergonomics are wanting.

My main worry are the sharp edges…can cause fatal accidents.
Then after relocating the dumpsite did they offer an alternative? Been seeing loads of garbage on waiyaki way around kangemi area…obviously an eyesore and health hazard

It is a lovely idea and a good start, especially if they have built those seesaws themselves.

Let’s also hope the waste contaminated soil was removed or decontaminated, some of the children are bare footed.
Next phase is to learn about levelling the ground and fine finishing.

The part on clearing the dump site I don’t criticize at all. I actually encourage it and that is why I did not mention it. But even when you clean your house you don’t leave it wet. You have to mop and dry it. Would you allow you kid to play here? I wouldn’t because I am sure a horrible injury is just one wrong step away. It is nothing about being white or black. You simply do not do mediocre when it is a kids life at risk. They are very vulnerable.

No, that’s not how.
This is a lazy way of doing it and the desire to achieve instantaneous transformation but the end result isn’t that appealing.
Normally the ground is levelled first, then small lumps of grass or single strands are planted. After some months of watering you get a nice level green carpet of grass.
But these guys don’t have the time for that but am not saying it isn’t a commendable effort compared to the eyesore it was.

I remember as a kid burning large mounds of trash and breathing in the black smoke to be cool. Cancer in my future for certain.

Good idea but that has to wait until the court case is over otherwise it will lead to more injunctions and therefore more delays.
