China granted us $11 million for Gatundu District Hospital expansion during President Uhuru state visit to China in 2013. The expansion is complete and the ultra modern hospital is serving citizens and ran by Kiambu County. President Uhuru had been negotiating the grant since 2011 when he was the area MP. The 5300 square meter expansion includes a modern medical wing with five-floors, four elevators, outpatient services, an emergency department, 12 ICU beds, 84 beds, medical laboratory, maternity unit, operating theater, wards, and several units of medical equipment, including CT scanners and X-ray scanners. The assistance by China is in response to a request by President Kenyatta in 2011 and will cost about 11 million USD, with an estimated construction time of 20 months.
Tuone watu Wa Nairobi county huko, sana sana watu Wa Githurai na Kasarani. Why didn’t the former city council and current governor not offering medical services to this place.
Maintenance is the bane of many Kenyan institutions and where money has been set aside for it, it’s often the easiest for management to misappropriate.
It seems the Nairobi clerks with their modest CV’s know how better to manage Nairobi effectively than the brilliant CV’s of our current county leaders starting with Gov. Kidero. Nairobi to me is one dirty damp with garbage and sewage flowing all over. A trip outside Nairobi is now recommended once a month to recover.
Waititu told folks he doesn’t need a degree to manage Nairobi and people laughed him out of town. He probably would be doing much better than that useless thief Kidero.
The next governor of Nairobi needs to address sanitation only and it will be a major improvement. Build sewer lines, clean/repair all the streets from CBD to the estates, collect all garbage daily and plant trees along all streets to absorb the pollutants in the city. The roads are being done either by KeNHa and KURA. Hospitals have been equipped by National government. Power and water is being handled well by national government. World Bank is now tendering for 2o modern markets for each ward. Once sanitation is done they can now renovate county schools and recreation facilities.
For garbage its sad that county government is paying alot more for its collection yet nothing is really being done. Its true that is where Gov. Kidero is pocketing alot of money from. For example the companies that got the tender are all individuals that are also his associates at Mumias who left it in ruins using the same schemes. Unfortunately garbage is a commodity but we our county leaders are too busy enriching themselves to do something about it. For example in Ethiopia they are building a garbage disposal plant which will create 50 MW’s of power for Addis. They signed the MOU almost the same time with Nairobi only that theirs has proceeded to Build, Operate and Transfer stage while ours remains in file. The waste in Kariobangi right now could be processed to separate plastic/paper/metal for recycling while biodegradable material can produce good fertilizer. The rest is processed to produce electric power to power all street lights in Nairobi and the balance for homes. That way county has no big power bills to pay anymore but actually get funds from Kenya Power for the power sale. Secondly the recycling plant generates income for the city from recycled products and fertilizer. Lastly the 10,000 garbage waste becomes sort after to supply the plant therefore the demand means it will be collected quickly and eagerly.
Looks good, lakini maintenance? In Kenya I don’t like schools and hospitals that go vertical, most institutions have enough land to build something like PGH Nakuru. I bet designs ni za China, and they didn’t factor that we have fair weather all year round so we don’t require a closed system for warming or cooling.
