Gatina Pesa is a community currency that is currently being used in Nairobi and Mombasa. So far 107 community groups are using Gatina Pesa.
So what is a community currency?
A community currency is a regionally based means of exchange that does not replace but rather supplements the national currency system.
Community Currencies bring a radical change to how we think about sustainable development. As a socio-economic development tool they offer an innovative way to improve conditions by:
[ul]
[li]Providing community groups access to interest-free credit.[/li][li]Providing a mechanism for communities to finance social services, such as education, environmental and health services.[/li][li]Increasing local trade, employment, small business development and overall local economic stability[/li][/ul]
Presently, the community currencies in operation in Kenya are: KangemiPesa, Gatina Pesa, Linda Pesa (Kibera), Ng’ombeni Pesa and Bangla Pesa (Mombasa)
one evening walking along a nyeri street some call girls were harassing a mukurinu. They were shouting…“Wee, wagithomo, unga ngwenderie gatina. Niuguraga gatina ? Ningukwenderia wega…”…the mokorino quickened his pace and i could only imagine he was saying so many Riswas kimoyo moyo…
This is very much legal. Frequent flier miles like the flying blue program offered by Airfrance and KLM and their skyteam partners is a community currency na hawasumbuliwi
