I’m exploring opportunities in online dev freelancing. Maintaining legacy systems in VB or VB.net. I don’t mind c# or python. I’m also conversant with SQL server and some not so little knowledge on the web dev stack(node.js, angular.js etc). I’m an old hand.
If you are in this business, share your experience here. I have seen guys quote $50 per hour on https: //www.upwork.com. . Very good cash for anyone in this Vumbistan.
The million dollar question would be, why go for someone who is going to cost me 50 dollars per hour while i can negotiate for a bulk service at a cost of 15 dollars per hour (yes 15 dollars)
50 dollars for a dotNET, angular.js,node.js coder, you will price yourself out of the market (consider the fact that the average monthly pay for an inhouse front end coder ranges between 500 dollars and 800 dollars before tax), 50 dollar rate is only applicable for low level coders churning out drivers and firmware
That said, i know the demand is there if you price yourself reasonably and you also have a solid portfolio.
First of all, you need to asses yourself and see whether you’re actually worth this 50 USD per hour. Your experience will most likely determine your value per hour. At times you see most devs always using this model to work on projects. It may depend on the type of project. If this is one time project you’re working on, go with a value-based approach instead of hourly billing. If it is a long term project, then you can always log those hours spent working and invoice your client on a weekly/monthly basis - depends on how you agree with your client. One other thing is that the hourly billing model should be researched first so that you dont overprice your client and you also dont sell yourself short.
I’m talking about guys who have been there for a long time! If I can get consistent gigs at $15 to $20 per hour, I could make enough to pay bills and enjoy being my own boss.
go there, get customers for long term engagements or who can supply you projects all year round and continue to work with them outside the platform, that way you’ll have 100% of your earnings. Also be careful you don’t get washed when you take negotiations off-site.
