A Valentine’s Day Eve secret escapade turned tragic when an ICT manager indulged in a drinking binge that led to his death and the arrest of a female friend.
Nathaniel Lausi, a communications officer at Huawei, died after consuming alcohol and smoking bhang with a friend on Nairobi’s Donholm estate, Buru Buru police were told yesterday.
Lausi was with his secret lover in the caretaker’s flat on the top floor of the apartment block where he lived.
The 35-year-old was confirmed dead at the Mama Lucy Hospital in Kayole, where he was rushed for treatment after he collapsed on Saturday night.
Police said Lausi started complaining of chest pains shortly after 7pm, moments after the smoking and drinking.
Rosemary Wangari Kuria, a 22-year-old who works at a city optician’s, was the only person with Lausi at the time. She was picked up by police after doctors confirmed Lausi’s death.
She was locked up at the Buru Buru police station for interrogation and was yet to be released by the time we went to press. Buru Buru CID boss Jeremiah Ikiao said Lausi spent the better part of the day with the woman in the borrowed apartment.
Lausi is reported to have downed five beers and smoked a roll of bhang. Ikiao said police were waiting for a postmortem report before a decision can be made whether to release or charge the woman.
Police sources told the Star Wangari told officers she had known Lausi for only two weeks after they met in the CBD. She said they had met every evening for the two weeks and Lausi never told her that he was married.
She said Lausi invited her for a drink at his flat, but ended up taking her to the caretaker’s flat, only a floor above his rented apartment.
Yesterday, as thousands of lovers across Kenya treated their spouses and other loved ones to memorable times, Lausi’s wife spent the day in and out of Buru Buru police station, where she was questioned.
She told investigators that she was attending a party with her friends in the city while her husband was at home.
She said she was called by the caretaker and told Lausi had been rushed to hospital after developing a health problem.
The caretaker is among the people lined up for questioning by police.
