Fifa has confirmed that alcohol sales will be banned at World Cup stadiums in Qatar after a last-minute intervention by the kingdom’s all-powerful royal family. The move puts Fifa on a collision course with Budweiser, who are thought to have a sponsorship deal worth tens of millions of dollars. The beer brand attempted to make light of the bad news, tweeting ‘this is awkward’ moments before the announcement. The move may yet drag Doha into a legal battle because officials agreed to ‘respect FIFA’s commercial partners’ when signing contracts. Supporters will now be restricted to buying alcohol in ‘fan zones’ between certain times, where a pint will cost £12 with limits set at four per person to stop people getting drunk. Anyone who does get drunk may be taken to sober up. Alcohol will also be available to purchase in licenced hotels and restaurants, which is typical under Qatari law. The shock U-turn is said to have come under pressure from Qatar’s all-powerful royal family
Managers wa Budweiser wafurutwe job wote. Mnajua kandanda inaenda to an unfriendly territory yenye pombe na ukahaba hazipendwi but still commit $75m to the shenanigans? Aje sasa?
