It’s tough being a woman in Nairobi’s Eastlands, where bathrooms are a public affair.
The womenfolk claim they have had enough and are now asking police to track and arrest “stupid men” who derive pleasure from spying on women as they bathe.
The wooden bathroom doors are dotted with holes, through which these men steal glances at women as they bathe.
Notorious estates include Pipeline, Kayole and those on Jogoo Road.
Speaking to The Nairobian in her Embakasi house, Maurine Ondari, a student at a local college, narrated how she is now forced to bathe inside her single room then mops the floor to avoid the peeping Toms.
Maurine said it is no longer safe to bathe in the building’s bathrooms, with many women choosing to have their friends keep vigil from the outside as they bathe.
“It is a big headache here, but we have to survive until we can afford a bedsitter or bigger house,” she said.
A spot check at a number of flats confirmed that bathroom and toilet doors in almost all the apartments have wide cracks and openings which these men take advantage of for free cinema.
Most of the peeping is done at night, sometimes from gaping holes in bathroom ceilings.
Winnie Savula, a resident of Pipeline, says these “perverts” should give them a break.
She claims that most of the men who ogle at women in bathrooms are married and living with their wives in the same flats.
“I don’t know what they want to see. It is sickening to even imagine someone taking time to look at your ‘fundamentals’ without your permission or knowledge. This habit must stop,” Winnie lamented.
Ruth Mutindi, another resident of in Pipeline, claimed they have been forced to use lesos to cover the openings and cracks on bathroom doors.
“Most women suffer in silence. I don’t know who will help us because this is not something you can report to the police,” Ruth said.
It seems it’s the same story in neighbouring Tassia estate.
“It has become a menace here. Men will follow you even while you are going for call of nature, get into the adjacent loo, just to hear you urinate!” Mary Wambui told The Nairobian.
She added that: “We know the men who have made this a habit and have reported the matter to the caretaker who promised to deal with it.”
Some of the women are accusing male caretakers of doing very little to curb the vice, which is becoming commonplace in most estates with single-room flats.
In Pipeline, where a notorious man was caught squatting under the door to have a better view of a naked woman bathing, the caretaker was slow in taking action against the peeping Tom.
When reached for comment, Peter Mwangi, a caretaker at an Embakasi flat, refused discuss the matter.
There are so many perverts walking around even right here on ktalk or probably are on this thread but outwardly you would never suspect anything wrong with them. It was only yesterday someone confessed to ferking and then killing a donkey to hide the rape evidence.
