The domestic violence i experienced and witnessed daily when growing up…i’m suprised i didnt end up with PTSD. i somehow used to perfom in school and nilifikanga a point in life whereby najitegemea,bila kusumbua.

“DO NOT stay together for the kids”

The day mum left home in the dead of the night remains to be the most memorable, saddest yet happiest day of my life. Why happiest? Because I knew that it was finally over. The nightmare, that is.

I am a child of a broken marriage.

For the longest time I can remember, I had always been that quiet,naive, timid, reserved, anxious, (add more similar adjectives) kid with the worst case of low self esteem. This was especially so throughout my high school life and for another three years post high school.

I was always unhappy and worried about things back home. I can’t count the number of times I wished I was born in a different family. I even ever contemplated the worst - suicide.

You see, family means a lot in the African culture. It gives a sense of belonging to everyone. It is the most respected institution across all African cultures. When two people get married, things are always expected to work. It is either the marriage works or the marriage works.

Quite unfortunately, things don’t turn out as expected in many cases. But it is always considered “too late” to turn back when it dawns on the two people that they were simply not compatible. Why? Because there are kids in the picture.
“How will they be raised when parents are apart?”
“Every child needs a mother.”
“Who will be my children’s role model?”
“What will everyone else say about us?”

Unhappily married parents end up staying together, leading miserable lives and suffering stress and depression, thinking that they are doing their kids a huge favor.

YET

They hurl all sorts of unkind words at each other in their privacy; curse the very day they started living together for it is that day that they signed their jail sentence and cursing every new day that breaks because it reminds them of the continuity of their misery.

Whether it is things that changed or it is I that grew up and started reading between the lines is what I do not know. But one thing is for sure - things seemed to be getting worse as I grew up.

Fast forward to the year 2007. This was the worst year of my life. I was not going to find mum home. This was the first time it had happened during my 17 years of existence. It was hard to bear.

I broke down.
I suffered depression. Alone. At school. And survived it on my own.
Still at school.

I would pass out for a few seconds, which would normally feel like days. I started suffering chronic pains around my neck and shoulders.
Sometimes I suffered sharp pain along the veins on my hands to the point that I could not even raise my hands. I never bothered to know what the exact cause was or whether these symptoms were linked to my
stress. I did not seek medical attention. Everything was worthless to me.

I cannot begin to explain how relieved I felt after talking to a total stranger about what I was going through. I did not even ask for a name or phone number. I would just ask them if they were willing to listen
to what I would have to say for 5 – 10 minutes and once they agree, I would talk and talk and talk and thank them and leave. I guess I looked retarded. But I didn’t care. It was too therapeutic to care.

But as they say time is the best healer.
