It has to do with the road below. If those pillars were narrow( and thus a small space), one pillar would drop on to the road below and partially block it.

There’s 3 pillars supporting the weight of two roads. Two pillars at each end, and one in the middle. If they used a 4 pillar design with two supporting each road, two of them would have to drop into middle of the road.
