According to the author, the world in general periodically resets due to cataclysmic events like sudden polar shifts that cause massive natural disasters. It happens on average every 7 to 15, sometimes 5 thousand years and wipe out most of civilization, forcing survivors to rebuild society from scratch. This has happened multiple times in Earth’s history leading to civilizations rising and falling in cycles.

At some point in the book, an experiment involving rats exposed to low magnetic fields is explained where researchers observed changes in their behavior, such as increased stress, and generally what you may consider immoral behaviour including rape etc. Other rats in normal magnetic fields seemed just okay.
