Most employees are trapped in the rat race with golden handcuffs and nobody can convince me otherwise. Nurses, teachers, bank cashiers, etc all earn a net salary of between 50k and 80k. These guys MUST report to work at specific times. They have no control over their time and therefore, it is nearly impossible for them to run side hustles. They are trapped in those jobs and the best they can do is save and invest their money.
On the other hand, a self-employed person e.g a guy driving his own cab will net about the same amount i.e 50k-80k/month. Unlike the employees, he is FLEXIBLE. He chooses when to clock in and when to rest. He can comfortably run a side hustle to increase his income because of his flexible schedule. If his side hustle needs him urgently, he will just switch off the apps and attend to that need. If he decides to lease 10 acres of land and plant maize huko ocha he will just log out for a week to plant/weed/harvest and then return like he never left. That flexibility is a super power that the typical employee lacks. He doesn’t need to ask anyone for permission or risk any repurcussions when higher priority needs arise.
I’m not against formal employment. I think employees are the backbone of society. But being an employee comes with serious hidden disadvantages that many people don’t see until they are too old.
You are an IDIOT! A teacher or nurse or civil servant can also plant his or her 10 acre maize on weekends. And for teachers schools have closed for a month so he can run his hustles for the next month. Also all employees have leave days and can take a week or two to attend to their businesses. I know a guy working for a company and during the 1hr lunch break rushes to see how his business is doing. Then he is at the business from 5pm to 9pm daily. So whatever you have posted is nonsense.
Many of the richest people huko mashinani are govt or private sector employees since they are into crop farming, dairy farming, matatus, rentals, pubs, their wives are running wholesale shops, supermarkets, hotels etc.
Exactly. A payslip enables you to access loans including unsecured bank loans and sacco loans. One of my friends from uni is a high school teacher huko kitale and is farming 50 acres thanks to loans. Mwingine ako kisii and has 2 lorries.
Yes, it buys you alot of legitimacy in this capitalist environment. I forget where I read of a country which does this, either SK or Japan..I can’t remember.
Basically a self employed, “biashara” guy who banks will avoid like the plague, approaches a “corporate” entity. You give them your money, a lumpsum savings. In return, you get a company title and address, a work manager, regular payslips worth a few years and an employment contract. For whatever reason, banks treat employed people like prized assets while entrepreneurs are shut out from accessing good capital.
Hujaona walimu wa serikali wana maduka vibanda mikahawa hapo right next tu shule…sahile hana shughuli staffroom na darasani ako hapo kwa hustle yake mbaya sana.
Hapo pa “use them to build a sizeable business” ndipo umekosea. If you have ever ran a successful business you would know that it requires 200% of your attention especially at its infancy. An employee has divided attention and that’s their undoing. Even side hustles often require spontaneous availability…employees don’t have that kind of flexibility to manage side businesses. If your business needs you on Tuesday at 9AM to 3PM next week what will you do if you are supposed to be seated in a cubicle somewhere with your boomer boss breathing down your neck?
Yet the most successful businesses start as side hustles. Jobs give you income to fund your external ventures and that becomes the parachute unto which you take off from.
No job means no money in most cases. There’s such a thing as relaxed 9-5 jobs. Usiwahi danganywa ati every high paying job is stressful.
If you can not handle the pressure with being employed and reporting to bosses then you cant also handle the pressure of being self employed and dealing with your employees. It cuts both ways.
Employees can give you heart attack and high bp at a moment’s notice ama unafikira zile story za boss angalia whatsapp ni za jaba?
Most employed workers are stupid kwanza hawa wa serkali. Kazi unapatia mtoto wa nani na ata saa zingine hayuko qualified.
Wakikaa kwa hizo viti ni kunyamba nyamba na kukatia wamama wa ofisi.
Juu wako PP they think they can rule over anybody and they create they own kingdoms assuming they are kings.
Private sector nayo its flexible but needs discipline dedication and time management.
The biggest advantage of govt employment from this thread is access to loans. Unfortunately, it is also the biggest disadvantage. I’m yet to see a civil servant who made something substantial and lasting from loans. Loan ni kama mihadarati once umeonjeshwa you never stop.
