In the past week or two, a street boy, …call him urchin if you may…, has hit the limelight and with it stole the hearts of many kenyans particularly the social media wannabes. Of paramount note is his ability to be fluent in English. That beside, he has demonstrated no special ability or talent.
The matter has intrigued me to no end. First and foremost, he is a fifteen year old boy. Most likely in form two. Its said he schooled in a private school before he opted for the streets. Thus being, his fluency is expected and indeed demanded.
Secondly, English, spoken English is just another language. Just like Greek, Luo, Maa, Punjabi or Sabaot. Its just a language. You listen, you practice, you master. No big deal.
The fluency in any language, with exemption of French and Gikuyu, should never be used to determine ones ability. Say, if you found an Irishman speaking swahili, or a Japanese speaking Luo would you accord them any special treat.
We are now falling over chairs for a selfie with the boy. Just because he is fluent in English. His comrades in the streets could be very good orators in Swahili or Sheng or any of the fourty something languages spoken in the country. One is good in English, another in Greek and the other in Kamba. All are languages. None is superior to the other.
Nb…french is to love as Greek is to lugha ya biashara.
Its not like he climbed a bootycious street gal or shafted a whale…excuse my french
Few want to be left out on anything that goes viral.
:eek::D:D:D
true true. it gives many the feel-good factor and also allows them to “prove” that they care.
The kid hashemishemi like some guys… First impressions mean a lot…mvalishe suti & atatoa nyoka pangoni. Kenyans value the spoken language try shrubbing on National TV frequently & see.
lol… smh
For now, he probably can’t do much but with the exposure he is getting (opportunity) he is bound to find his path. Like it or not most of us are where we are because we were given a chance.
huyo kwanza angepelekwa approved school pale mwea, ashike adabu. unasomeshwa aje hivyo vyote only to waste away the time and rescources committed by your folks!
we made the same mistake by looking at fluency and mistaking it for intelligence / gumption / honesty and giving the anti corruption job to PLO. The same holds for guys who ain’t eloquent, a case can me made that Kimaiyo lost public support hence his job the moment he said “sieke”
Do you know his story?
watch hio rink ya k24 alafu ntakujibu.
I know of a chokosh who lives in Dandora and is fluent in umeffi. No help has ever come his way.
Wapi video?
I don’t know what’s wrong with some of you guys, you want to appear too intelligent for life… The boy speaks good English which is not the norm for a street boy, he gets recognized and then it’s a problem for you? WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU WANT!!
Juzi there was a story on international news of a boy who made a Messi jersey from polythene paper, the kid got recognized by I think UNHCR and they organized with Messi and he got the boy a signed shirt!! Everyone was happy
When something of the same sort happens here, then you have all these MFs with their ‘intelligent’ opinions
The kid has maybe gotten an opportunity and all you can do is complain? Makes me wonder how miserable some of you are
And btw if the nothing had happened to the kid, again you would be here saying oh what is the govt doing, oh wapi governor etc
People like you are the reason why some people are reluctant to help MDOMO TU and you did nothing!
@mabenda4 This guy has better spoken English than 99.74% of graduates in this country. I think he deserves the attention for that achievement if nothing else
pls grand chief hekaya master,Weka hio greek msoto after “luo”.alafu u pls note that rary madowo nolonger is a luopean after he insulted " Baba"
And, friends , we didnt wait long for our very distinguished Mother Teresa to crawl from the boards. I have no issue with helping the lad. Help him please.
Thats exactly my point. Spoken English is not a benchmark of any ability other than speaking in English. Everyone speaks a language, some two , others four.
I am one of those who are wowed by this boy, for his grasp of the current affairs, ability communicate clearly, analyze his problem and provide a logical solution This is not ordinary for that age. He is way ahead of his years and him asking for an opportunity to make something of himself he hits the right chord with many Kenyans who agree with him - do not forget the huge numbers of unemployed and disillusioned youth who also claim to have denied opportunities
I think his message is way more mature and way better than what most Kenyans, including the leaders have said this year… nani aemongea point kuliko huyo boy???
It is we all know she has been repeatedly endorsed as the most intelligent talker her fluency in American ghetto lingo is impressive to say the least.
