You see in the US, If you are disabled, jobless or a vet, the government gives you some money monthly that you can use to take care of your needs. Usually $300/month. There are also several food banks that you can go and get food, free of charge. So you get that majority of Americans are not worried about basic needs and therefore they get bored quite fast and to keep themselves busy, they get an hobby to do and boom, here we are.
