Gen Zs and broke men like @Sanchez11 who nurse one beer for the entire night hukuwa hasara tupu. Sometimes I wonder how some club owners make money when such characters occupy all tables on Fridays and Saturdays. Meanwhile pale SOHO na Gemini kila meza haikosi 10k spend even on weekdays. I am starting to think that targeting the common man is a loser’s game.

I once visited such clubs for benchmarking nikaona ni upuss. Meza mbili zinashikanishwa halafu zinazungukwa na mtu nane nursing mzinga ya County ama Chrome mpaka usiku wa manane. Another sizeable crowd is just patrolling the dance floor causing trouble na kuomba omba pombe. Madem wa mchele pia wako hapo ready kupita na mwenye amezubaa. Club imejaa but half of the crowd is composed of idlers and the other half wanacheza Na cheap drinks.

Ile Bar Next Door ya Kileleshwa is the exact opposite. Last time nilikuwa huko almost all tables zilikuwa na mizinga za 10k+. No wonder investors at that club were able to build the big club at Northern Bypass. Pesa ya sherehe iko upper middle class, sio working class ama peasants. Hata Quiver ya Thika Road ilikufa but the one in Kilimani/Ngong Rd is still thriving. Targeting peasants is a fool’s errand. They are more trouble than they are worth, sadly.

These kids make what? 15k as receptionists and makangas or kamageras in Nairobi. They pay 5k in rent, 3k in food, and 2k in transport (maybe more). How then do you even allow them in clubs? If I were a club owner in Nairobi, I’d put an age restriction of 30 years old for men and that’s being lenient (maybe 35) to keep off broke boys from Eastlands.

Club life needs men who have a budget of 20k+ monthly to spend on sherehes. Such people also have friends who have similar budgets so if there’s 5 guys, one guy anashika bill this weekend and so on. Sasa these young boys from Eastlands with their mitumba shoes, torn Arsenal jerseys, and 100 bob hats are the ones you’re letting into your establishment? Of course they will fight over that one petite chic or what ghetto the other one is from.

Guys from Muthaiga wanna chill, talk about their last trip to Cape Town and how there’s so many Germans now, so and so’s wedding at Fuschia gardens, Y’s relocation back to Kenya to oversee the family business, X’s dad retirement from the ministry of foreign affairs…all this over bottles of Moet dropping 100k minimum.

There used to be a spot pale museum hill called Tree House (is it still there? it’s been a minute) where we’d do farewells of people moving abroad, those relocating, new roles in the family business. Some of the dads wangepitia and pay a 300k bills alafu wanauliza what’s the plan for getting home unaskia “mtakujiwa at 3AM” hehe. Fun fun times. Too bad I no longer see those people anymore after leaving the old country for what seems like forever. The old spots aren’t even there no more. Crazy world. Time waits for no man.
