I’m currently planting onions and tomatoes, now where can I get precise details on the expected amount of rainfall in Rumuruti particularly.
P.s…story za Nguatah Francis sitaki,asande
Hizo nyaya zako zitaenda na mvua hadi ushangae, invest in a boat.
@kalel, weather records, including rainfall data are available at a fee from the Kenya Meteorological services. You can also get them from KALRO, formerly KARI. But will you be able to analyse several years data and make practical use of it?
Another issue from your enterprise is the timing. You should play about with factors of demand and supply if you really expect to make money from farming. You should embark on your enterprise when factors of production are limited to a majority, if not all of your competitors.
I’m not depending on rainfall,so timing and market there’s no problem, issue ni excess rainfall
That’s good @kalel. Maybe you need to exert more control by use of a greenhouse/s set on relatively higher ground. You’ll have greater control over diseases and pests. You’ll also harvest for a longer period…translating to more cash assuming your timing was right.
I also like the crops you’ve chosen. Almost all households use them everyday.
greenhouse tomatoes don’t have as much demand as the kienyeji ones, and when not relying on rainfall, hakuna story ya season, you plant whenever you want
more of an Ark rather than a boat. the Rains are coming.
Can you plant onions/ garlic in a greenhouse?
Anyone who done it, please advise.
And how much are they leasing land in rumuruti @kalel??
where I’ve leased zimekaput, but ni 7k per acre @karema-hitl,onions za greenhouse bado sijakutana nazo
@karema-hitI, you can grow anything in a greenhouse. But the best crops to grow in a greenhouse are high value horticultural crops. Tomatoes are preferred coz the indeterminate variety grows upwards…upto 20feet in length. It’s like having a 10 storey building on a 50x100 plot.
Gross margins for greenhouse onions, garlic, kales among others are too low. Capsicums are okay coz they are high value. My two-cents.
Thanks. One other thing, I grow tomatoes in grow bags and have problems controlling anything above eight feet coz I can’t lay them on the ground.
How to do??
I was scratching my head wondering how kalenjins grow in greenhouses
@kalel acha ujinga, nunua fishing hooks thats the only way you will survive during the el nino, style ya Noah
Haki ya nani wewe?:D:D:D:D
He he he! Umeniweza 10-0!
Kales = Sukuma-wiki.
@karema - hitI, just lay them down along the rows as you continue harvesting until they reach the end of their productive life.
