Somalia is doing so to preempt the possibility of the US pushing for the independence and revognition of Somaliland. The US, Israel and now Ethiopia prefer an internationally recognized Somaliland as that best serves their interests.
It is also a move designed to protect Somalia maritime zones as she is in dispute with Yemen over certain islands while on the other hand Kenya rejected ICJ and is pulling all the strings to have a negotiated settlement.
The port of Mombasa has her market in Uganda and Eastern DRC safe. The port of Lamu may be affected if Ethiopia gets a sea port but by only reducing number of containers since South Sudan still needs an alternative to port Sudan.
Maybe Ethiopia sees the potential of port business as she can server south Sudan, northern Uganda and even Central Africa and DRC.
