From wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunning–Kruger_effect
The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which relatively unskilled persons suffer illusory superiority, mistakenly assessing their ability to be much higher than it really is. Dunning and Kruger attributed this bias to a metacognitive inability of the unskilled to recognize their own ineptitude and evaluate their own ability accurately. Their research also suggests corollaries: highly skilled individuals may underestimate their relative competence and may erroneously assume that tasks which are easy for them are also easy for others.[1]
The bias was first experimentally observed by David Dunning and Justin Kruger of Cornell University in 1999. They postulated that the effect is the result of internal illusion in the unskilled, and external misperception in the skilled: “The miscalibration of the incompetent stems from an error about the self, whereas the miscalibration of the highly competent stems from an error about others.”[1]
I have noticed a lot of people like talking about stuff even though they don’t know enough. Mtu anadhani he knows more about his health than a doctor so anakula chumvi ata akikatazwa. People always think they are good with computers because they did some packages, underestimating the amount of knowledge and time required to accomplish a task. The most annoying one is when you see everyone talking about politics or the economy.
Just because you buy and sell stuff doesn’t mean you understand economics and just because you watch the news every day doesn’t mean you know enough to talk about politics.
It’s very annoying! Like the totally ignorant fellows in this village who always throw around opinions about the US elections and shit when in reality they don’t have the slightest understanding of how the US electoral process works and the complexities involved, ati sujui Guka Sanders hehe nkt. Before you form an opinion at least have a basic understanding of the facts involved.
skill and innovation are different and distinct. A skilled person is sort of a master at that particular field but that doesn’t mean they are the best! It’s unfortunate that many people, especially in Kenya, having undergone basic education still see themselves as masters in that field. Look at a civil engineering graduate with 5 years experience, of mostly running errands for a multi national company, he sees himself as a highly skilled engineer especially in comparison to a perceived ‘junior’ from Kenya polytechnic.Same thing happens in the fields of education, health and sports…
In this Village and elsewhere, we only give our two (2) cent.
The knowledge that exists in this world is super enormous, for anyone to claim s/he is knowledgeable.
That’s why discoveries are made everyday.
So people should not give their opinions because they may be under/overestimating themselves?
And the silly nigga who posts this cannot see the inherent contradiction in this premise when he himself is giving an OPINION?
Opinions are like assholes - everyone should have at least one. Trouble cmes when some assholes have the opinion that other assholes should not have opinions…
Like the explanation says it is a bias. Of course I am also guilty of it but there is an arrogance which people have about their perceived knowledge that ticks me off. Also this is not an opinion it has been observed by actual scientists.
