Pay-TV firm MultiChoice, which operates DStv and GOtv, lost more than 100,000 premium subscribers in 2017, due to what it terms unregulated competition from streaming services and over-the-top platforms, such as Netflix and Amazon.
In its submissions to the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa), which is conducting an enquiry into subscription TV broadcasting services, the firm admitted that streaming services have eaten into its market, further shrinking its revenue.
Last year, a confidential report showed that the firm had lost more than 300,000 subscribers since 2014, to the new players.
–As it tries to recapture its lost market, MultiChoice early this month said that it was developing a streaming-only version of the DStv service, which will start in the South African market.
–DStv Now is an application accessed through either Android, iOS or via a web browser, which allows subscribers to view content online.
–It has been argued that the only revenue stream that is keeping MultiChoice afloat is from its local sports broadcasting rights.
I left kitambo, why spend 10000 a month on premium TV that is expensive, has very few documentary channels, old movies repeated a lot, few current series and your only get EPL as the selling point. Their only saving grace was explorer decorder but as usual they priced it high.
For 5000 safaricom home fibre I get free streaming services like Terrarium, Redbox, Mobdro that gives all the sports i need directly like sky sports/BT sports, all documentaries, series and movies globally not just usa, uk but eu and Asia. I also get fast internet for my use. Dstv decorder nimetoa plus the cables and dish. Unfortunate for them even their own showmax for Kshs 200 a month failed to pick and the best they could do is offer it for free to premium subscribers. I don’t miss the sa adverts as well and their poor panelists on sports.
it will go down just like nokia due to their ignorance on changing trends, before they wake up from the “knock” it will be too late, kwanza on that note story ya kwese pay per view ilifika wapi?
Dstv is not worth it. I get 30mbps, local channels, nat geo and some other stations for 4000 bob from zuku. Hii ingine ya 100 sttuupiid channels ni ujinga. Mtu mzima anaonanga locals and maybee two other channels. Kuonyesha watoto cartoon ni ufuckin. Waone natgeo ama wangooje waone tv yao siku watabuy. Sijui mbona wazazi huufikiria lazma wawe marafiki na watoto wachanga.
hata netflix ni ujinga ati series zinatoka kwanza region ya USA before itokee africa na wanapimia watu wa africa content the best thing is terarium which is free if you have internet and you get everything (porn sijui huwa wameficha wapi ) and netflix also requires net .
Hii kitu wangeacha umeff ya packages. Mtu alipie zile channels anataka priced differently hata kama between 300 and 700 per channel but one has to select a minimum of 5, instead of forcing clients to get packages full of shitty channels.
Nilitoka zamani sana and there is no way I am going back
