Disowned

Kenyan economist David Ndii, who is the Chairperson of President William Ruto’s Council of Economic Advisors, has been criticised by Kenyans on social media for telling them that power prices were not going to reduce any time soon and that they had no option but to get used to it. Ndii threatened Kenyans with power outages if they were not willing to continue paying higher power prices. His statement could indicate that power prices in Kenya will go up beginning in April when Kenya Power’s proposals to hike the cost of electricity are expected to take effect. Ndii also denied that the Kenya Kwanza government had promised to bring down the cost of electricity, contradicting President Ruto’s comments in January 2023 that his government had put in motion plans to reduce power prices. Reports suggest that corruption and mismanagement have contributed to South Africa’s ongoing power crisis, and corruption in Kenya’s electricity sector has been identified as a significant challenge.
