Raila tricked Uhuru into believing that he was copying from his script, only to discover too late that Raila was actually going to attend the debate whether Uhunye comes or not.

did the meaning of a debate just change? i saw a deflated mzee mwenzangu who couldn’t use the cheap shots he had lined up to throw at the President…remember “rulimg via Skype?”

Why are people taking about Uhuru and not Wainaina or Aukot? shows you the debate was irrelevant.
There was no debate, only one candidate showed up so it was an interview.
Elections are not won and lost on media appearances.
Our media houses have often said that they are fashioning the debates using the American model.
An important note to keep in Mind on media house assertions that they are the custodians public interest is as follows:-
-
The US,Presidential Debates are organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates which is a non-profit organization as opposed to a Ltd Company.
-
The US Commission is composed primarily of the main political parties, Democrats & Republicans as key stakeholders. Media are just one of the stakeholders.
-
Funding for the debates is transparent and every effort is made to avoid the process being skewed by vested interests as was the case here locally.
-
The calendars of the debates are done in consultation with the candidates and candidates are not ‘informed’ or ‘invited’ on a fait accompli basis as was the case here in Kenya.
-
Whether he went or not he wasn’t going to win from appearing; the best he could do was secure what he has from attack; but overall his appearing was lose-lose option for him.
-
Not turning up wasn’t about taking the voters for granted; it was about not being part of a media production that was about them; rather than about the public. Otherwise why would they refuse to inform the public HE was not coming; & continue pretending that he was, while they knew very well he had already said he wasn’t going to show up?
-
H.E knew media was looking for a fight - for blood - so as to make headlines, without appreciating that it was only going to raise temperatures even higher 14 days to an already hyper-intense elections. H.E refused to indulge them.
-
looking at Raila answering the questions, it was not lost to anyone keen that he was well prepared for the session. He already had the questions. He was part of it. Uhuru was not in anyway involved. This was a session that had been deliberately designed to embarrass him and raise political temperatures.
-
The company that organised the debate is called Debates Kenya Ltd. It’s owned by Catherine Openda. She is also the Director of Public Communications for NASA. The judge was also the prosecutor. Uhuru would have lost. The intelligence was clear.
