Great news for Huawei fans around the world! Finally, Huawei fans around the world will be able to experience Huawei’s HarmonyOS. After the United States government imposed several sanctions on Huawei, the Chinese tech company was quick to introduce its own mobile operating system. In fact, HarmonyOS is a multi-purpose operating system. It has the ability to run on different types of electronic devices. https://www.kenyatalk.com/index.php?attachments/harmonyos-global-ftr-700x394-jpg.511930/![harmony-os-1-700x394.jpg|700x394](upload://eBfYr0l8JSB5k9kRwdOIG1zS1CM.jpeg) The cross-platform capabilities of HarmonyOS give it the ability to run on almost any electronic device. Apart from smartphones, it can also run on smart TVs, in-car infotainment systems and smartwatches, to name but a few. The report of Huawei launching its own mobile operating system was exciting news for all Huawei fans around the world. Everyone was so eager to get their hands on it.
In fact, Huawei’s HarmonyOS started to spread very fast right after its launch. It has earned its place as the fastest growing mobile operating system in the world and is still growing. As it stands, HarmonyOS is only two years old. Yet it is the third largest mobile operating system in the world.
The article forgot to mention the part where the multi platform part of Android is just a fork of android like every other android custom ROM on every phone including Google’s Pixel. They don’t run AOSP. No phone does.
They didn’t create or write shit. They forked android without Google apps. That thing is still on android 10.
Yes, I’ve read their explanation about how it’s a compatibility layer on top of their custom os with added libraries to the Linux kernel that android doesn’t use. I call bullshit. 99.9% of all their apps are android apps. Is that then a simple compatibility layer or just the entire OS if everything depends on android?
Sooner or later, with Google increasing the API target requirements every new release, they’ll have to update to android 11. They have like 3 years more though.
Compatibility layers are supposed to be like Windows with WSL and WSA. Windows can run Linux and Android apps but at the end of the day, it’s still windows and everybody uses it as a windows machine.
You simply can’t have a compatibility layer that runs everything on a system. Even the settings had Android references before they changed the names from .android to .harmony. Even the freaking file system was android’s file tree.
Huawei didn’t do shit. They simply took advantage of Android’s kernel that has been trying to get back to look like the mainline Linux kernel (it was a very heavily customized Linux kernel before) and jumped over to using the Linux kernel fully (albeit customized).
Google has instructions on how to boot GKI’s btw. Kdrag0n managed to compile and boot the mainline Linux kernel on a pixel 6 and it booted and most stuff was running fine
Did Google or Rubin invent Linux? if you want us to go back that far? Because Android is LINUX. Anyone in this world is free to customize Open Source Linux and that is What Huawei did. If Google are not happy with Huawei Using using some of their libraries why can’t they sue or lock the devices.
It just uses a customized Linux kernel. The Linux kernel isn’t GNU Linux. They aren’t even developed by the same team.
Linus Torvalds is responsible for the Linux kernel. Solely. He has never written any UI elements or features you find on whatever Linux distro you know.
Huawei didn’t customize a Linux distro. Linux doesn’t even have the ability to run android apps. The compatibility layers that exist are still in early development.
Linux barely supports ARM 64. Not to mention the fact that MALI GPU DRIVERS FOR LINUX ARE BONKED AND ARM HAS NEVER BOTHERED TO FIX THEM. The panVK drivers aren’t ready for commercial use and MESA isn’t interested in writing an open source driver for MALI GPUs.
Huawei isn’t on a Linux distro. They are on a customized android OS. Just like you are right now. Samsung’s ONE UI, GOOGLE’S PIXEL UI, XIAOMI’S MIUI , HUAWEI’S OLDER EMUI are all custom forks of android. Why then call harmony os a new OS when it’s just another fork?
Don’t conflate the Linux kernel with GNU Linux. Android is not a Linux distro.
I am going through a period where I am angry at everything.
In the past, I disliked fake tech news that a person needs to read between the lines to actually understand. Now, I loath them.
I am fuming right now. The guy who named the Linux kernel , Linux and then named GNU Linux , Linux , did everyone a huge disservice. That’s how we got people thinking Android is Linux. Hell, even Ubuntu, the Linux distro isn’t Linux. That name should have been kept solely for the Linux kernel by Linus Torvalds. If anyone ever took time to compile the Linux kernel and flashed it on their phones, it wouldn’t even boot. Not to mention the lack of hardware acceleration which is 50% of all the workload.
In precise terms Android vs Linux, Linux kernel stands as the OS while the framework known as Android is the one developed on Linux kernel top.
[COLOR=rgb(184, 49, 47)]So Linux kernel is also run by ALL the android devices but Android is not there in every Linux device. Hence, the basis on which development of Android takes place is termed as Linux kernel.
I also know that Huawei used a lot of Google’s code in their Harmony OS just like the other Chinese companies steal Western Technology and perfect it. Why Reinvent the wheel? USA buys other countries technology and trademarks all the time. Microsoft bought Skype from a small European company. Haeir bought GE appliances. China stole CISCO source code. USA bought Germans Scientists. The list is endless
You just said you already know all that in the first statement then you AGAIN conflated GNU Linux with the Linux kernel.
I’ll repeat again. GNU Linux isn’t the same as the Linux kernel. Android is running a custom Linux kernel but it is not a Linux distro. ALMOST ALL Linux distros run the Linux kernel thus calling them Linux is fine I guess. Android is a real different OS with a heavily customized Linux kernel.
You get it?
Simply taking android and then using the mainline Linux kernel and calling it a new OS is just deceptive. It’s basically the same thing as good ol’ android only this time the kernel isn’t heavily customized.
Google bought Android too… Hell, I’ll tell you that Huawei is one of the major contributers to the mainline Linux kernel. Their file system commit (EROFS) was added to the Linux kernel recently and is better than everything else.
You know how some Nissan cars use Mercedes engines?
Or how the Toyota Supra uses a custom BMW engine?
Huawei took the Toyota Supra’s body and used the stock BMW engine without any customization and are calling it a new car. Bullshit.
Yes, it’s true, a McLaren F1 is a McLaren F1 despite using a custom BMW engine
However, no one gets to take the entire body and system of the McLaren F1 and then take a similar specification BMW engine then call it a Harmony Car! It’s just dishonest and not worthy of being in any tech news.
Oh, you absolutely should. Do us a favour and give up on life too. The world could use one less bonobo. The gentleman clearly knows what he’s talking about. You on the other hand? You’re just waffling. Dingus!
