Crime pays. Cruelty pays. Being able to get away with breaking the rules pays. Competence pays and being competent at wickedness pays best. The world we live in has perverse incentive structures, rewarding the evil and punishing the good. Justice is rare, and mostly illusory. To outpace others, you at least need to exploit some people.
