Countries Ranked by Index of Economic Freedom (Kenya Fails terribly)

Issues considered are the rule of law, govt size (tax burden), regulatory efficiency and open markets.

The top countries as ranked in 2022:

The first mainland African country (we ignore islands Mauritius and Cabo Verde) comes at no. 61 in the moderately free section.

That is Botswana

Kenya disappointingly comes in the mostly unfree section at no. 138. Very close to the repressed section, and just 7 positions above Haiti.

Personally, I am convinced that these rankings are meant to pull countries like Kenya with the potential to develop down.

In virtually all parameters, Kenya is ahead of almost all African countries, as well as half of Asia and South America. Does anybody think Kenya is less free, for example, than Cuba, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Haiti?

Or Myanmar, Afghanistan, and Kazakhstan?

Ukweli. In Mauritius, Botswana and Cape Verde which are ahead of Kenya, criticizing the president would get you jailed. Hapa Kenya Uhuru na mama yake walikuwa wanaletwa mbio and the only thing he did is kushtua watu na kuwapelekea polisi. Nobody went to jail or was killed for criticizing him. Hizi rankings huwa useless at best.

Most of those items that are needed for survival are zero rated. He / She may be paying very little tax on the few taxed goods they buy.

Those who are able to quietly live off the land are the freest people on earth. There’s a saying to the tune that the small (non-commercial) farmer is the last truely free person in this world.

But the number of people who are able to live this way without interference is going down

Most of those countries you mention are ranked lower. Yes, it’s not scientific and there’s some subjectivity to it. Yet, I agree especially on the assessment of kenya, and of a number of other countries. Botswana has the reputation of being the least corrupt nation in sub-saharan Africa
