It’s an African curse!
"In 2010, the Atlantic Monthly (20 May 2010) provided an analysis of the net worth of all 43 US presidents—from Washington to Obama—and found their combined net worth to be US$2.7 billion in 2010 dollars. But the personal fortunes of such African leaders as Gen Sani Abacha of Nigeria, Gen Ibrahim Babangida of Nigeria, Omar el-Bashir of Sudan and Mobutu Sese Seko of Zaire (now Congo DR) each exceeds the net worth of all US presidents combined. Worse, in November 2014, Isabel dos Santos, the daughter of Angola’s president Jose Eduardo dos Santos was named the richest black woman in the world with a net worth of US$3.7 billion.
In February 2014, when Lamido Sanusi, the ex-Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, wrote to the President accusing the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation of not remitting US$49.8 billion (about three times the nation’s annual budget) to the Federation Account, it was he, the governor, who was sacked for ‘financial recklessness and misconduct’. About 60 per cent of Nigerians live below the poverty line; only 30 per cent have access to reliable electricity; and 47 per cent lack access to clean drinking water." Ayittey (2015)
