An initiative by the opposition Cord coalition leader Raila Odinga has so far collected Sh100,409 from the public through a mobile money account meant to raise funds for Kenya’s striking teachers, Safaricom has disclosed.
The listed telco said the M-Pesa account dubbed ‘Solidarity Account’ had raised the amount as at 12.30 pm today.
Mr Odinga yesterday announced he had deposited Sh100,000 in the M-Pesa account.
The initiative comes after several successful mobile-based fundraising campaigns.
Kenyans in August raised Sh6.1 million through mobile money to help Emmanuel Jadudi undergo a brain tumor surgery in India.
More than Sh664 million was raised in 2011 in a fundraiser dubbed ‘Kenyans for Kenya’ to provide food supplies and long-term solutions to famine that had ravaged the Turkana region and northern Kenya.
The M-Pesa paybill account number 672672 was registered on September 23, 2015 by opposition party ODM through its executive director Oduor Ong’wen, records from Safaricom show.
No this is a hoax. Kalonzo was to contribute 100k and Rao also 100k. As of now safcom claims it has received less than 200k from cord and kenyans in general. Meaning hata Cord haitaki kuchanga ama nini?
Ngojeni mods waamke hii thread itafuata za Wakanyama. Mnacheka babu and the way he had a brainwave to come up with this genius idea of keeping teachers in school?
