Concerning consumer laptops and Windows 11

If ever have to choose between buying a consumer laptop or a business laptop, go for the business laptop, ALWAYS.

In my experience (with HP), consumer laptops like HP Envy and Spectre are absolute dogwater. They are built to last maybe three years before the hinge breaks off, the battery dies, or the rubber feet peel off etc; even with the utmost care. They also have a limited number of ports. They do not come with an internal CMOS battery so when your battery dies you begin to experience shit like this.

Good luck finding an original replacement battery.

Same thing with Windows 11. If you want peace of mind, install the ‘Pro’ version. With the pro you can easily disable bullshit like Co-Pilot AI, network soft-disconnects when no internet access is detected, Bing search on start menu, disable automatic updates (don’t do that though), etc. You can achieve the same on Windows 11 Home, but you’re going to Google a lot of shit and have to mess with the Registry.

TLDR: If you ever buy HP, buy from the Probook/Elitebook series and install Windows 11 Pro.

Good advice - ukitaka kula nguruwe chagua aliyenona

Thank you for sharing this.

In my experience repairing PCs, It’s either Thinkpads or Dell Precision laptops. Especially Thinkpad T series and P series laptops. These machines are tanks. I went to a guy’s shop in Gikosh after one of those fires and his T440, keyboard all melted and whatnot, booted straight to the desktop!!! My work PC is a T400 from 2007 and I swear, it burnt something inside that to this day I don’t know what because it still reeks of burnt wire.
I avoid Elitebooks and Probooks. Once an issue starts, that’s it. Zimejaa shelves za mafundi everywhere. I have a Probook i5 10th Gen iliwacha kufanya mouse buttons just like that.

I bought my HP envy in 2019 and I have been using it as my primary device. I don’t have a smartphone so lappy naweza kuitumia like 12 hours/day daily. The only problem nimeona ni hizo rubber zilitoka within 2 months after buying. Shida niko nayo sahizi ni fan inasumbua which needs replacement. Also I replaced the battery in 2023 because fan ilikuwa inadisperse heat kwa internal components ikafurisha battery, I never realized it sooner. Otherwise HP envy is good. Hakuna hinges zitatokana anytime soon, the laptop has full metallic build.

Just buy a Thinkpad

the body is aluminium bit the hinges are screwed on plastic. Looks expensive on the outside but cheaply built inside.

My HP Envy battery has swollen twice. First time after four years and second time afteronly two. I’ll never conside any HP Evny or Spectre ever again.

I once used a Lenovo laptop and I hated it completely. It had a very small battery, lacked a LAN port alafu most importantly the display was trash and it was touted as being a Full HD (1080p) Display. I put it side to side and compared it with Dell and HP and it lost in all segments hands down. Dell and HP displays were very clear and had good viewing angles. They had LAN Ports and had bigger batteries that outdid the Lenovo. Funny enough, all those laptops were within the same price range.

It depends on which envy version you bought. Maybe you had a cheap version. My Envy is all aluminium even on the hinges.

:green_emoji: No it’s not all metallic. open it up and see. Remove the screen and see what’s between the screen and the alluminium. The hinge is metallic, yes. but the screws attaching the hinges to the screen assemply are screwed to plastic.

If you’ve had a good experience with Envy, that’s ok. But imo it’s a shit brand.

Firsts microsoft co pilot is not shit,

Read more about it and how it works

I agree consumer laptops are meant for students as entertainment laptops .

They are cheaper though. If you need a durable laptop pick a probook, elitebook or the thinkpad or thinkbook series .

Ex uk laptops and certified refurbs are good bargains.

Just like used cars an ex uk laptop is quarter the cost of a new one and they last more

maybe my bias. but i prefer this chunky chunky laptops i.e old dell and lenovo ones. Everything was balanced unlike those new age thin hp envy’s. i still own a sony vaio i used to write pascal code in. Ni forever machines.GOOD ADVICE THANKS!
