NAIROBI, Kenya – A 9-year-old girl gave birth in the youngest pregnancy ever recorded in Kenya, a newspaper reported Sunday. The birth prompted government calls for birth control.
The 9-year-old, who was not identified, gave birth to a healthy daughter, the Sunday Nation newspaper said, quoting junior Health Minister Simeon Shitemi.
‘This is very sad. How does a child give birth to another child?’ Shitemi was quoted as saying. ‘Something very serious is happening. Mothers have let down daughters, fathers have let down their sons. Family planning facilities exist. Tell the people to come forward.’
A surgeon at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi told the paper that mothers as young as 11, 12 and 13 years are common.
Shitemi, who called such statistics alarming, said 60 percent of girls admitted to Kenyatta were suffering the effects of illegal abortions. About 80 percent of pregnancies at the capital’s major hospital were among single women, the minister said.
