AFC/M23 Confirms the Death of Commander Sultani Makenga leaving the M23 Movement at a Crossroads.
The coalition Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) has announced the death of its long-time Military Commander , Sultani Makenga , marking the reported fall of one of the most enduring and controversial figures in eastern DR Congo’s armed conflict.
In a statement issued from Goma , the group said Makenga died on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, at a hospital in Kampala after succumbing to injuries sustained a day earlier after a Drone Strike.
His sudden transfer across borders and equally sudden death raises questions that , for now , remain unanswered.
For years, Makenga was not just a commander—he was the backbone of the March 23 Movement (M23), a combat force that has shaped both the battlefield and political calculations in North Kivu Province and the wider eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
His name carried weight in military briefings, diplomatic meetings, and sanctions lists alike.
To his supporters , he was a strategic leader , to his opponents , he was the face of a rebellion that refused to fade.
His reported death arrives at a moment when M23 has been regaining ground and asserting influence, making his absence more than symbolic—it creates a vacuum at the very top.
In liberation movements , leadership is not just about rank , it is about cohesion , command , and survival.
Without its most recognizable military figure , the group now faces the test of whether it was built around a cause—or around a man.
Notably , neither the Ugandan government nor authorities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have officially confirmed the death , adding a layer of uncertainty to an already complex regional security picture.
Makenga’s death , if confirmed , may silence the man—but it will amplify the questions.
Who takes command next..??
Will M23 fracture , regroup , or harden its position…??
And perhaps most importantly , will his death cool the guns in eastern Congo—or simply pass them into new hands..???
Rest in Eternal Peace , Comrade Sultani Makenga.. +++ ![]()
