Checki Maneno - The Day I Almost Quit

Having been on a Sabbatical from cycling, Today was the day that we faced the monster Kilimambogo.

The day started early, with one goal in mind, to make it to the top of that hill/mountain finally with a bike and enjoy the ride back down.

So the journey begun and we could hear Kilimambogo saying, thau shall not pass! and we responded try your best mountain, try your best :)!

Kilimambogo is very funny, it cheats you from early on with very polite climbs and a long winding road. Only for you to get shocked midway up the 10 kms to the summit at over 2250 Meters above sea level.

It took us a proper 3 hours to get to the top and at some point it was a reality that giving up was an option and was riding with tears right at the tip of my eyes Wah!

This view was a real motivator that we were getting somewhere, even as the inclination got higher and higher.

The next stop was at Sir Macmillan’s gravesite. Apparently the vehicles that were carrying his body to the summit for burial broke down here and they decided, “Hey, this is also a great burial spot for him as well” and thus they buried him at this here spot.

The placard of his wife…(I guess, sijafanya research poa hapa)

Just yonder at the main road is where the vehicles carrying his remains broke down. We got past this point meaning that we were now putting out more CCs than those vehicles hehehe

Anyway, we got back to our journey to the summit, it was a treacherous ride my friends and the climbs and rocks got bigger and bigger lakini kuna warembo walikuwa wanapanda pia, lazima tungeshine mbele yao so tukangangana hadi tukafika summit, 10kms later without any single flat section or downhill section.

We finally conquered Kilimambogo! You can all guess how it went from here we raised dust and stones on our way down. That was the reward of all that torture we went through getting to the summit.

PS. There is a CIA bunker at Kilimambogo, niliona lakini siweki mbisha. You either believe me or not

There was a time we went round Kilimambogo, from 14 falls to Kangundo rd, goodness Ukambani sio kuzuri. My bike was literally sinking in sand!!! Na tunapitia mavichochoro there weren’t defined roads. It was scortching hot and nowhere to buy water, niliteseka sana. Can you imagine how much energy you are using just to overcome sinking in the sand

Hehehe, that’s why bike iko na gear, select wisely the one to use on any terrain, kwa hio mlima siwezi shuka while ngoing upe
