UDA MP Florence Jematiah Withdraws Controversial Statement Against Church After Uproar

In a surprising turn of events, Baringo Woman Representative Florence Jematiah has withdrawn her controversial statement targeting Kenyan churches.

Jematiah, in a brief statement published on her social media accounts on Wednesday, November 20, expressed remorse, adding that she withdrew the statement after going through the comments of her previous post.

According to the woman representative, she was convinced by responses shared by Kenyans that churches should be left to do their work and can include oversight because believers are citizens.

“I have gone through all the comments on my previous post about Churches. I hereby withdraw my statement and apologise. I have to agree with you all that churches should be left to do their work,” MP Jematian wrote.

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) lawmaker in her previous post shared on the morning of Tuesday, November 19, took a swipe at Kenyan churches accusing them of disrespecting President William Ruto’s administration.

In her controversial post, the lawmaker urged the church to stop demeaning the government and unnecessarily inciting other denominations into staging wrangles with the Kenya Kwanza regime.

“The Church should respect the authority in power. Stop demeaning the Government and unnecessarily inciting other denominations. Churches to do their work of Hope and Faith to the believers. Good morning!” Jematiah stated.

Following the remarks, Kenyans online strongly criticised the legislator, with some alleging that she lacked the moral capacity to lecture church leaders on how to conduct themselves particularly when addressing the president.

“You possess neither the ethical standing nor the moral probity to pontificate to the church on any matter,” commented lawyer Willis Otieno.

“You also advise your fellow politicians that the church is a house of worship and they must never seek to speak to the congregation who leave their homes to go and pray not to listen to politicians,” commented another online user.

Jematiah’s change of stance comes a week after the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) accused the government of perpetuating a culture of lies, over-taxation, and violation of human rights as well as failing to resolve the health and education crisis in Kenya.

In response, President Ruto commented saying, “We must be careful to give factual information lest we become victims of the things we accuse others of doing.” Other politicians allied to Ruto’s government also hit back at the clergy, accusing it of fueling misinformation.

The standoff between the government and the Church over a recent donation spat that President William Ruto found himself in took a different twist on Tuesday, November 19, evening after the State House revealed that it had not received back the rejected money.

State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed revealed that although the Catholic Church, through Archbishop Philip Anyolo of Nairobi, declined Ruto’s donation, the church had not refunded it.

‘‘By the end of the day(Tuesday, November 19) we have not received any money back,’’ Mohammed told Citizen TV.

This development comes even as it emerged that the Catholic Parish of St. Joakim and Anne in Soweto, Nairobi, had personally requested the controversial donations.

The parish priest reportedly made the request to President Ruto during a church service, revealing that the matter had been discussed with the senior hierarchy of the church beforehand.

The request was confirmed by Ruto when he rose to address the jubilant congregation, following subsequent appeals by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja and a host of other local leaders.

''As the church too, there are requests that we have brought to you via our leaders and bishops, this is not via the Christians alone, but via the citizens too,’’ James Mburungu, the parish priest told Ruto.

‘‘I have been told by the chairman here that you are building the priest’s house and I am also a developer with a record in building various projects like affordable housing…I will give you Ksh5 million,’’ Ruto stated.

During a church service on Sunday, November 17, Ruto donated Ksh600,000 to Soweto Catholic Church in Nairobi for choir members and Ksh2 million that would be used to construct the father’s house.

The Head of State further promised to donate an additional Ksh3 million that would be channelled to the church’s account to purchase a church bus. During the event, Governor Sakaja donated Ksh200,000 to the same church.

Bishop Anyolo noted that the donations made by the two senior government officials contravened the Public Fundraising Appeals Bill 2024 which states that any person who solicits or receives money or a benefit conducts a fundraising appeal regardless of whether the representation made was direct or indirect.

“These funds will be refunded to the respective donors. Furthermore, the promised additional Ksh3 million for the construction of the Fathers’ house and the donation of a parish bus by the President is now declined,” said the Bishop.

Senator Dan Maanzo Claims Raila is Calling Shots in Ruto Govt

A Kenyan senator on November 28 claimed that President William Ruto is not the actual figure behind the reigns of power in Kenya.

Makueni senator Dan Maanzo, while speaking on Citizen TV, disclosed that Raila Odinga is ‘politically in charge’ of Kenya and that Ruto is depending on him with respect to running affairs in the nation.

“Right now, Ruto’s government is hanging onto Raila’s lips. It is Raila who is in charge of this country right now, politically,” Maanzo claimed.

The senator made these comments while condemning Ruto’s recent visit to Kondele, Kisumu on November 26 where he received a rousing reception from the area residents. The President was in Kisumu to attend the opening of the 4th African Sub-Sovereign Conference.

Ruto’s visit to the lakeside region, a well-known Raila stronghold, was the second since the formation of the broad-based government that incorporated leaders aligned to Odinga. His first visit was on August 28.

Even so, Maanzo dismissed Ruto’s visit, claiming that the crowd was financially incentivised to turn up adding that the funds could have been used to promote infrastructural development.

“The senator for Kisumu (Tom Ojienda) was (allegedly) seen mobilising these crowds, dishing money out for those who came to the rally. Those who were not given money were (allegedly) seen shouting ‘Ruto Must Go’ in the same rally,” the senator claimed.

“That money could have been used to build roads in Kisumu or Syokimau but it was used in politics,” Maanzo added.

Maanzo further challenged Ruto to do more for Raila’s African Union Chairmanship (AUC) bid by injecting more funds into the bid. He also called for him to increase lobbying amongst other African presidents to aid Raila.

“The money that Ruto used in going to Kisumu, if he really wants to help Raila, he could have used it to go to West Africa where Raila currently is. In the AUC race, the voters are presidents. Only President Ruto protocally can approach presidents of Africa to campaign for Raila,” Maanzo affirmed.

“Now you find Raila going to these foreign countries to meet foreign ministers and prime ministers without meeting presidents wasting time and money,” he added.

In the Kondele rally, Ruto, for the first time, publicly acknowledged Raila’s support in stabilising his government in the wake of the June-August youth led protests that threatened to cripple his administration.

While reprimanding leaders who promote tribalism and divisive politics, Ruto added that he would continue working with Raila to promote unity in the country.

Chaos ensued at a burial ceremony attended by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in Ngarariga, Limuru, Kiambu County on Thursday, November 28.

The incident took place after goons reportedly began shaking a tent where the former DP was seated alongside his close political allies including Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa.

In the videos obtained by Kenyans.co.ke, Gachagua and other politicians were captured seated at one of the tents that had been designated for senior congregants.

However, just before the former DP could be invited to address the crowd, a group of unarmed locals began shaking the tent, prompting those inside the tent to rush out in fear.

The congregants have recorded scampering for safety as the rivalling factions engaged in heated wrangles that led to the destruction of unknown value of property.

During the incident, Gachagua’s car was destroyed with footage of the scene showing the former DP’s black Toyota Land Cruiser destroyed on the rear window.

According to reports, several people also sustained critical injuries with the photos of the event further showing plastic chairs scattered on the ground. However, the cause of the drama is yet to be established.

The scrimmage comes amidst Gachagua’s acrimonious fallout with his former boss, President William Ruto, in a recent speech, the second deputy president took a swipe at Ruto over his style of leadership.

Speaking during a church service at the AIPCA, Gachagua hit out at the Head of State for failing to heed his advice on the Adani Group deals. According to the former DP, despite warning Ruto over the deal, the president failed to listen to his advice.

While reiterating the level of impunity in the country, Gachagua said he was viewed as the enemy of the people whenever he tried to convince the president over some of the government dealings.

“I told the president this Adani deal was plagued with flaws and the people did not want it, and he despised me for it. And it was put out to look like I was opposing government projects,” Gachagua said.

He added, "Whenever Cabinet Secretaries were in disagreement, they used to ask me to tell the President. Nobody can tell the president this is not right.

President William Ruto on Sunday, December 1, dismissed the recent heated differences between the state and the religious leader after the Catholic Church rejected his personal donation of Ksh2.6 million that he gave to St Anna and Joakim parish in Soweto, Nairobi.

Speaking during a church service in Kimana, Kajiado County, while attending an Interdenominational Church service, Ruto asked the church to divert its energy from viewing the state as an enemy but rather as a development partner.

‘‘There is no need to throw words at each other, there is no need for all that, I want to ask these people to tone down on the verbal exchanges. They should relax, there is no competition’’ Ruto stated.

Ruto at the same time challenged religious leaders, while referencing the recent incident where the Catholic Church under the leadership of Archbishop Philip Anyolo of Nairobi Archdiocese rejected a joint contribution worth Ksh5.8 million that he and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja had offered.

According to Ruto, the recent discussions between the government and the church regarding the decision to make a personal contribution, especially amid ongoing economic and social challenges, highlighted a conflict that didn’t exist.

‘‘There is no competition between the church and others, no competition between the church and the state as they are all the same thing,’’ Ruto stated.

‘‘I am asking you Kenyans that this country is the same thing, therefore we cannot thrive on division. The church and the state must work together,’’ he added.

The Catholic church in a statement on Saturday, revealed that they had returned all the rejected money that Ruto had donated to them.

This happened even as the National Assembly leader of the majority Kimani Ichung’wah maintained that the church was dishonest all along in the debate on the rejection, as all the money was yet to be returned.

According to Ichung’wah, the Catholic Church was also dishonest in telling Kenyans that it had returned part of the money that was a pledge and had not been handed over to them.

‘‘I want to insist that the money that Ruto contributed to the Catholic church has not been returned yet. I want to ask elected leaders to respect elected leaders because they have also been chosen by God to serve Kenyans,’’ Ichung’wah stated.
