One Hen Campaign Project was formed by a group of 4 students from the University of Nairobi who were inspired by a gift of a chicken they received from their grandmothers’ and with the help of their neighbor’s cock, our chicken started laying fertilized eggs and hatched them into chicks. As the hens multiplied, we could sale eggs to buy stationery, sold some hens to pay our school fees and uniform. Little did we know 15 years later in a campus room we will share our experiences after we unsuccessfully looked for internship. We envisioned a one stop shop for a chicken farmer but we said let’s start one hen at a time to achieve a bigger dream.
At One Hen Campaign Project we train women and youths organized in groups on entrepreneurship, agribusiness and poultry management for a month then we give each member of the groups’ one hen in a coop that he/she is required to rear as per the training, then at the end of the year upon multiplication each member returns 2 hens once so that other groups can benefit. The project has created opportunities along the poultry value chain and as a result with our beneficiaries we have invested in a hatchery complete with parent stock, chicken feed processing plant, formed a chicken farmers cooperative society and we look forward to finding investors to help support us set up a chicken meat processing plant and expand our poultry feed mill plant. So far we have made impact to over 100,000 households in Kenya.
