burundi

ear Burundi,

The people would love to say “Nkurunziza must go!” and get you out of the problem you are in. But their leaders are diplomatic. They cannot say this because someday some of them will do the same thing and will expect your leaders to remain silent. It would take only a single week of a complete economic blockade by all your neighbors for Nkurunziza to agree to quit his illegal third term. But Rwanda won’t do it because Kagame also arm-twisted his people into giving him permission to run for a third term. Tanzania won’t do it because for decades they have held Zanzibar in a chokehold of a union. DRC won’t do it because they have enough problems as it is, and have faced invasions from everyone else so many times that they probably just want to keep to themselves. The UN will just try to be diplomatic and blame both rebels and government equally. We understand your position, we have been there before. Perhaps the rebels will accept a prime ministerial position and make peace. And another step backward will have been taken by democracy. We cannot help, our leaders can, but they probably won’t. We endured Kibaki’s illegal term, so for your own sakes just endure Nkurunziza’s. It will end eventually.
