17/9/1965:Templar Barracks Kahawa was reopened as a teachers college and named Kenyatta college in honour of Kenya’s founding father.
The college which is currently known as Kenyatta University was home to nearly 2000 British troops and it is where the 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers of the British Army recieved its colours which are currently laid up at Irish regiment chapel St Annes Cathedral Belfast.
The British High commissioner Mr Malcolm McDonald while presenting Mzee Kenyatta with the keys of the college, described the building as a former fortress of colonialism.
" The building would now become a different type of fortress from which students would emerge to fight ignorance and poverty" ,he added.
