Three weeks ago a lady friend of mine had to undergo some emergency operation in a Nairobi hospital to remove her uterus. Due to fibroids she has been bleeding endlessly and the doctor recommended her uterus had to go. She checked in well started being prepared for the operation but there was a challenge, she did not have enough blood. She is new in town and has very few friends, even her husband was not around. She asked me to look for blood donors.
I started contacting people who are known to me and her so they can help. Little did I know that asking somebody to donate blood is actually asking them to involuntarily take an H.I.V test. She needed three pints, I donated one myself. Getting the other two was a bell of a task. You call somebody unamwambia, so and so is in hospital and she urgently needs blood, can you help. Everybody I called promised to come and donate but nobody picked my second call. At the end of the day, her son who is in high school in a Nairobi school had to come and the other pint was organised by the hospital.
Next time you are in hospital and you need blood, it is not gonna be easy.
I won’t tell you the name of the hospital but I think they don’t want to deplete their blood bank, the point is you donors for blood, not necessarily your blood group which will replace what you are given. Fair enough if you ask me.
There’s a continuous shortage of blood in this country. The little they have in their blood bank they prefer to reserve it for emergency cases. That is why more people should donate blood regularly.
MP Shah!
But really, it also depends on the bloodgroup. Sometimes you need like B- blood, thats when shit hits the fan because not many people are even aware of their blood group. And with guys like @Web Dev and @The_Virus drinking everyday or @MulikaMwizi popping P2 like njugus, they are in no position to donate blood.
After I finished high school, I was so broke man, no job nothing na mzazi ni economist mbaya. So one afternoon I am listening to Capital Sports and there was an emergency call for blood group O- which is what I have. An Asian lady at Nairobi Hospital needed it. Then I thought to myself since I have the blood group what If I ask for pay. So I sit with a pen and paper ready to take the number. After 20 minutes they announced again and I got the number. i texted the number and told them I want 50k in exchange of my blood. I had not even put the phone down and they called twice when they called. i froze, i didn’t think they would consider it. They called twice but I didn’t pick I thought may be it is the police who were on to me for extortion (too many movies). So i switched off my phone and left the house to go watch soccer at my local. I came back at around 8pm. Kuwasha simu i got like 10 sms from the same number asking/begging me to contact them. They said they were willing to consider my offer o_O. I couldn’t believe it. To this day I still wonder what could have happened had I picked that call
Why would you freak out? Surely you must realise you cant have body fluids pumped into someone without them screening it? They also ask you all manner of health questions and to sign a waiver form to do the HIV test before they inject you and suck out your life-liquids. So its not involuntary
