A Pennsylvania judge sentenced Bill Cosby to 3-to-10 years in state prison for aggravated indecent assault in the only criminal case to emerge from dozens of allegations against the once-beloved comedian in recent years.

He was convicted in April of drugging and molesting former Temple University administrator Andrea Constand in his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004.

Prior to the sentencing on Tuesday, Judge Steven O’Neill classified Mr. Cosby as a “sexually violent predator.” With that designation, 81-year-old entertainer will have to undergo lifetime counseling and will be listed on a sex-offender registry.

Mr. Cosby, who has said he is legally blind, has maintained his innocence and said that he had a romantic relationship with Ms. Constand.

Judge O’Neill denied Mr. Cosby’s lawyers’ request that their client to remain free on bail pending an appeal. Instead, Mr. Cosby—once known as “America’s Dad” for his endearing and empathetic portrayals over decades—will soon occupy a prison cell.

He handed over his watch and other belongings in the courtroom before being led away in handcuffs.

“Finally Bill Cosby has been unmasked, and we have seen the real man as he’s headed off to prison,” said Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele.

Andrew Wyatt, a spokesman for Mr. Cosby, said the prosecution was racially biased and alleged that prosecutors used a doctored audio recording of Mr. Cosby at trial.

“Mr. Cosby has clearly been denied his right to a fair trial,” Mr. Wyatt said.

The former star of “The Cosby Show” and other TV series is the first celebrity convicted since a wave of sexual misconduct allegations against powerful men emerged last year, ushering in the #MeToo movement.

Mr. Cosby’s first trial on the charges in 2017 ended in a hung jury and mistrial.

At the retrial in Montgomery County Court, prosecutors portrayed him as a serial predator. They said he used his fame to win the trust of young women before drugging and assaulting them.

Ms. Constand testified the comedian gave her wine and pills that incapacitated her and then groped her. Prosecutors called five other women to testify in a bid to support Ms. Constand by indicating a pattern of behavior by Mr. Cosby. The other women’s allegations against him were too old to prosecute.

At the first trial, only one additional accuser testified. Legal experts said Mr. Cosby’s attorneys will likely argue on appeal that the judge erred by allowing more accusers to speak at the re-trial.

“If one was sufficient in the first trial, why were five needed in the second? I think this is a really good appellate issue,” said Wes Oliver, a law professor at Duquesne University.

Ms. Constand’s five-page victim impact statement was released Tuesday prior to the sentencing. In it, she described the long-lasting effects of the assault and two trials.

“Bill Cosby took my beautiful, healthy, young spirit & crushed it,” she wrote. “He robbed me of my health & vitality, my open nature, and my trust in myself & others.”

More than 60 women in recent years have accused the entertainer of sexual misconduct that goes back decades. He has denied all the allegations, nearly all of which are outside the statute of limitations.

Not in your lifetime.

There is an agenda to incarcerate black role models. How many white males have been accused of doing worse things than what Bill did yet they walk free. Stay awoke

Unlikely. His victims weren’t white. Cosby’s blunder is that he picked white women.

The guy did sordid things to his victims, this is not a race issue.

The same way the white man made Bill do all that stuff

Bill Cosby conviction means a great deal not just for Bill Cosby’s victims but for women all over the world who are sexually assaulted while drugged or drunk under duress with a weapon ,threat of violence or otherwise.Men know that an unconscious woman and an inebriated woman can not give consent. And there are decent men who will not take advantage of women. The ones who do take advantage of women as a source of power are the ones defending Cosby. How can anybody defend a family values role model who used quaaludes to get women to have sex with him-most of whom he was supposed to be mentoring.Quaalude is the brand name for the sedative and hypnotic drug methaqualone. Bill Cosby admitted this under oath in a deposition for his sexual encounters with 5 women by his own admission. Who needs to drug women for them to have sex with them? A sexual predator is who.

It is a victory not just against one perpetrator of male sexual abuse impunity against women but against the collective untouchable male predator reality that many women are powerless against.Bill Cosby is a symbol of men who exploit their charisma, positions of influence, authority and power to abuse those weaker than they- be they priest to boys, producer to struggling actresses/actors, politicians to poor young women etc. The fact that he is 81 and blind sends out a message to not just male predators but female victims. Sexual assault and abuse of any kind is an inexcusable wrong and even with the statute of limitations a sexual predator remains culpable for this for the rest of his life even after jail terms.Hence the sexual offenders register that recquires a person who commits a sexual offences to be publicly listed on state website so that all neighbours and employers they have for the rest of their lives know about their propensity to sexual predation. The effects of sexual abuse and the propensity to sexual deviance and predation do not go away hence the logic behind permanent and compulsory exposure in public registers for sex offenders.

The public humiliation in the sunset of Cosby’s life is a kind of poetic justice. He privately humiliated his victims in their youth, his comeuppance came when he is 81 years old and blind. Well done all the brave women who spoke up and to the victims’ attorney Ms.Gloria Allred(herself a victim of sexual crime, she was raped by a doctor at gunpoint in her youth and got pregnant thru that ordeal) who created a safe place that helped women come out in their dozens to send a strong message to sexual predators.Particularly Andrea Constand who fought her powerful abuser Cosby for a decade, she says, she did it for justice. Nobody is above the law.The conspiracy of silence that shrouds sexual violence is a social norm, however these strong women stood defiant even inspite of the statute of limitations and have been vindicated by the ruling. As the saying goes, when you strike a woman you strike a rock. No saying what you strike when its 58 women. I hope priests and other high profile predators will soon fall too.

hi strory ni bs. Why should a bitch wait for over 20yrs to report a sexual offence?

Time gives people perspective and courage! Thats why even those accusing priests report many, many years later.
