Atheists demand removal of 'God' from national anthem

Atheists in Kenya have lodged an online public petition demanding the removal of ‘God’ from the national anthem.

In a statement on Sunday, the society said “as non-believers, we feel that the National Anthem is not representative of us, and goes against the spirit of the constitution”.

They said the removal of ‘God’ will make the anthem more inclusive since “not all Kenyans believe in the existence of God”.

They were referring to the first line of the national anthem whose lyrics are: Oh God of all Creation.

The society’s demands drew a few remarks from Kenyans on social media.

In one tweet, someone said: “When atheists petition the state to remove the word ‘God’ from the national anthem, who do you blame? William Ruto, Uhuru Kenyatta [or] Shallow Consience”.

Another person said: “The petition … would fail. Atheists in Kenya know it. What they don’t seem to know is that it damages atheism.”

The petition is the latest effort by the society to push its ‘Godless’ agenda.

In September, the society held a workshop promoting ‘Godless parenting’.

They have also been carrying out campaigns to advocate for the scrapping off of religious studies from the school syllabus.

The Attorney General suspended the society’s registration following [U]protests from religious leaders and legislators.[/U]

Until some form of thinking is made criminal, it’s well within their rights, but the concerns of a few can’t be seen to trample the rights of many.

He does have a point. But this seems like an attempt to just get people talking because, I bet, even he knows this will fail. Even if the word God is removed from the anthem, which won’t happen… well, it’s just a psychological victory. Personally, I really don’t care what the anthem says. I can’t even sing the second and third stanzas of the English version… and I last mumbled it in primary school.

Atheists in the house, how do you deal with this, now that the current society doesn’t accept and is not ready to accept atheism? I bet claiming openly that you are one can not be taken kindly out there. It’s as if its next to being gay:(:(. I believe so many politicians are atheists but go to church or mosque not for worship but as a sense of belonging to the society. I do not have a problem with one being an atheist but how do you people face the society???

Israel ni kwa jews. Saitan ni wewe na mama yako. God is recognized in the constitution and our forefathers also believed in a Supreme Being. If you feel your rights are being violated, you can move to Europe and China where atheism thrives. Otherwise, in Kenya, WE BELIEVE IN GOD!!!
