Or at least he is according to the Mirror.
Following yesterday’s incredibly disappointing loss to a steaming pile of… something… in 11 Manchester United jerseys, questions are being asked of Arsene Wenger, and a certain line of them have to do with the slumping Alexis Sanchez.
As we’re all painfully aware, Alexis hasn’t really hit the sublime highs of last season - especially not since his extended injury leave which has seen him score only one goal upon his return, with zero assists notched under his belt. His erratic form, coupled with the team’s downturn in results, is apparently creating a selection headache for Wenger if we’re to believe the Mirror’s John Cross, a source who is generally not all that inaccurate.
According to the Mirror:
Chile star Sanchez, who has struggled this season after not having a summer break because of the Copa America, knows there have been discussions about him being rested but fears it could make the problem worse.
Gunners boss Wenger is likely to make changes for Wednesday’s must-win clash with Swansea but it remains to be seen whether Sanchez will be taken out of the firing line and his determination to play may make it difficult.
While it sounds nice to give Alexis a mini-rest in advance of the league’s home stretch, FA cup replay and the herculean task of trying to come back versus Barcelona in the Champions League, the reality of the matter is that the depth behind Alexis is virtually nothing that’ll strike any kind of fear into opposing defenses. Joel Campbell is a nice squad player, but not much of a scorer. Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck could theoretically fit in on the left wing, but that’s not an ideal solution. Mesut Ozil… just no.
Therefore, despite his poor play and the pressure to succeed, it’s probably likely that we’ll keep seeing Alexis starting game in and game out in the hopes that his form will return eventually. Either way, this is not a good scenario to be in and Alexis must pick up his form - and quickly.
