I will give you two situations to show you how unforgiving the world is.
Kevin, some guy who we went to primary together (he was behind me by three classes) graduated with a degree in Nutrition. He looked for a voluntary internship position in some hospital in Kibera and got one. He would provide free services in a bit to boost his chance of getting a job since looking for one proved to be quite a hustle. His immediate was a lady and he was well behaved and came to work on time and performed his duties as expected. He wasn’t given any form of compensation may it be in terms of fare or lunch. He used to foot all his expenses. Kelvin used to stay in Donholm you can imagine the amount of money he spent. He used to be in touch with his boss all the time incase any vacancy arises he be referred to which the boss accepted. In his 5th month of work; he was joined by another volunteer graduate and this time round it was a lady joining him. They used to work together. The lady stayed nearer to the hospital as her home was a walking distance so she incurred less expenses. After working for three months (the lady) to Mark that marked the 8th month he was there, she was called in by the manager (the immediate boss) for an interview. Kelvin asked what she was being called for and she declined to say it lying that she didn’t know. A vacancy had arisen after one of the employees got a better offer to work in an NGO. She was given the job immediately and for Kelvin he was left being just an intern. She was moved to the office where the former used to operate from and Kelvin came to knew about it from a fellow employee. He went to ask the manager why she had not called him for the interview yet he has been volunteering for 8 months. To add to his argument he even told her that the lady intern used to stay nearer than him and this could save him expenses. What made him more angry is that he had a degree while the lady in question had a diploma. The manager gave him some flimsy excuses that didn’t make sense. To add salty to the injury she asked him to work for 4 months so as to be absorbed to the hospital which later turned out to be a big lie since she had a reputation for wanting free labour and giving ladies the upper hand even when they were lowly qualified. The same day he went to talk to him is the same day he quit his internship at the hospital. Luckily he got a job afterwards but he doesn’t want to remember that incident.
The second situation involves some guy who did HR. I don’t know why but of late HR has been deemed to be involved in situations like this too much. This one I will say the way I understood it since I overhead some dude saying it to another. This dude graduates with a degree in HR. He gets a HR internship in some company in town. He works for 6 months and is promised to be employed. Later, the story changes that the one who was to leave the company didn’t leave as he had earlier planned but rather stays. The manager manages to convince him to work for 6 more months and promises to employ him permanently. Since he is desperate for a job he decides to take the offer. He works for the other 6 months. In between a lady preferably a third year students joins him for attachment. She works for three months and after the attachment period elapses she gets employed much to the astonishment of this dude. He is very furious as to why he can’t be employed yet he has been providing services for the last 9 months piling up expenses also. He goes to the manager only for him to tell him he’s busy. All the time he was being told the same thing. Even when he wasn’t busy he used to tell him the same. So what he did, is that he reported to work that day cleared his desk, returned company property and told the manager he can go fuck himself and left. He was just tired of being used around. Turns out that the manager had the reputation of hiring people as interns promise them employment after the internship period alafu anawaguezia meaning the company used to benefit from free labour. For the dude he got a job in some blue chip company in Upper hill paying top dollar for his services.
This is why the government needs to have a clear minimum wage policy and enforce it. Hii mambo ya kutumia watu kama tissue ati juu unawapa “experience” ni upussy of the highest order. People must be paid for their time. Ati “just thank god, at least you have something to do, even if you’re not being paid”…fuck that shit.
Modern day slavery does not just exist in the Middle East. Our government does not care about it’s prevalence here. Do we even have GoK run job boards where the unemployed youth can get matched to jobs???
They prefer dip because they are cheaper to pay. Especially the county government.
Wanataka 2 dip holders instead of one degree holder. It is fucked up. But pia vile @1776 Amesema. Know your worth and angalia mbele kama opportunity inakam. And do not get stuck in the same place hoping to be absorbed. Ukiona ni mchezo tembea enda kwingine. It works out eventually for most despite the hardship
I interned at Achelis Kenya for 6 months not getting even bus fare money. I decided I had had enough and left them. Then on the very day I was just about to start a new and 100X better occupation, they called me incessantly trying to see if I could rejoin them on a paid temporary position. I was gracious enough to thank them but I politely declined their offer. I have never regretted it.
When I was an undergraduate, kila summer from 1st year, I would apply for internships at a science research lab. They would pay for housing and provide a stipend of $3000 for those 8 weeks (over 10 years ago). Actually interns in the business and engineering fields were getting double or more. Interns should demand for remuneration hadi these companies style up. It’s unfair…
