Amnesty - It is not fair to offer amnesty for tax cheats

After dutifully paying my land rates and rents for years I think it is time to start defaulting big time. Rather than waste money paying local authorities for no service rendered, I will invest in better things and pay the rates 50years from now since it appears the city authourities have a habit of extending amnesty to defaulters all the time.

It is foolhardy and dishonest to pamper rates defaulters when a good number of law abiding citizens pay their PAYE, NHIF, VAT, RENTS, RATES e.t.c well on time.

This disnonesty should surely stop. If you cant afford land rent dont pretend to own land (or we petition for reduction of rates to manageable levels). Period.

If the council can not collect rates and rents effectively from ALL they should make land ownership free.

The problem with that is after a period of defaulting, especially if your kashamba is in a very prime location…utaenda ufanye search kwa lands upate a different name and holder of the piece of land, yaani umeibiwa…most people don’t pay for the services but rather to have records and proof of ownership! kama unapenda your investment just pay and let be…

You have a point there but in Kenya, the law abiding citizens usually suffer at the expense of the criminals (most of them are politicians)
