JOYCE AKINYI
GODMOTHER OF NAIROBI…

On 10th January 2025, inside JKIA Law Courts, Justice Njeri Thuku dropped the gavel that sealed Joyce Akinyi’s fate, twenty-five years behind bars for drug trafficking. She was a woman once called the Godmother of Nairobi.

She stared blankly, lashes intact and yet unshaken. Until 2050, her new residence would be Lang’ata Women’s Prison, the exact opposite of the opulence she had paraded since stepping into Nairobi in 1999.

Joyce was born in Ugunja, raised in poverty, as the eldest of seven. By 1999, both parents had passed, leaving her with nothing but responsibility. She gathered her market savings, kissed her siblings goodbye, and boarded a Nairobi-bound bus, chasing dreams in a city she had only heard about in songs.

In 2001, she landed in Kanairo with no papers, no godfathers, just blind faith. A menial job kept her afloat, but Nairobi has a way of corrupting innocence. The little wages, the long hours, the temptations… slowly, her Christian upbringing crumbled. Money was king, and Nairobi whispered shortcuts.

In 2002, destiny walked into her life via Zanzibar Nightclub: Anthony Chinedu, a Nigerian charmer with the aura of royalty and the pockets of a drug lord. He wasn’t here for tourism; he was “Da Transporter,” recruiting desperate Kenyans as drug mules.

That night, he spotted Joyce. A dance turned into a one-night stand, the fling became a relationship, and soon he was whispering pillow-talk secrets about his business.

And so Nairobi’s Bonnie was born. From mule to recruiter, she quickly mastered the trade. Chinedu handled international logistics, while Joyce scouted desperate recruits from Kanairo’s alleys. She was no longer just Chinedu’s lover; she was his partner. By 2004, she had earned the nickname Godmother of Nairobi.

In July 2004, Chinedu “cuffed” Joyce legally, marrying her to strengthen his Kenyan base. The empire grew fat: a palatial house in Lavington, luxury cars, land worth millions, and the crown jewel, Deep West Resort in Lang’ata.

But paradise doesn’t last. By 2007, love curdled into hate. Chinedu wanted ¾ of their Ksh 300M fortune; Joyce told him to dream on. The breakup was noisy, messy, and with casualties.

As Kenya burned in the 2007/08 PEV crisis, Joyce had her own battlefield in Lavington. To strengthen her side, she found a new lover: Budalangi MP Raphael Wanjala, then Assistant Minister for Water & Irrigation. A man powerful enough to slap journalists in broad daylight, yet powerless against Joyce’s charm. With Wanjala by her side, Chinedu’s days were numbered.

In October 2008, Joyce convinced Wanjala to join her narco hustle, exploiting his diplomatic passport for “safe passage.” In love and clueless, he agreed. Together they flew to India, declaring a humble Ksh 375K at customs while hiding a suspicious Ksh 75M.

New Delhi police were not amused. The couple was tossed into Tihar Prison, India’s largest jail. Joyce used a fake passport, Wanjala shouted “Mimi ni Mheshimiwa!” but the Indian cops only laughed. For six months, they rotted, while Chinedu in Nairobi danced a jig, free at last to enjoy his empire. After government intervention, they were freed in March 2009, humiliated but alive.

Joyce returned with revenge in her eyes. By April 2009, she was plotting Chinedu’s downfall. Using her connections, she pushed for his deportation. In April 2013, police raided his Kileleshwa home, found “drug equipment,” and arrested him. Despite his lawyer—a young Nelson Havi—fighting in court, Chinedu’s fate was sealed. On May 26, 2013, he was bundled onto a plane and deported to Nigeria, along with 20 others.

Joyce had finally won. With Chinedu gone, she inherited both the fortune and the narco empire. But luck is not eternal.

On 13th July 2019, the curtain finally dropped. At 3AM, police stormed Deep West Resort, catching Joyce red-handed with 5KG of cocaine. Beside her stood her new Congolese lover, Pine Kalala. This was the arrest that finally stuck.

Dim eye lost to Darwin. She probably bleached herself but still ended up looking like a toad. @Yugni do you also have a palatial home and a Congolese boyfriend for business?

So why provoke the nuclear bomb from Ugenya when we decided to unite?
