In one of his sermons he says when he was growing up in Nyandarua, their neighbour in shags used to be a very wealthy dude who had even built a mansion. On weekends the dude would bask in a balcony overlooking their shanty house while drinking. Kiengei hated it and vowed never to construct a house with "upstairs ". The guy would give them lifts from the local shopping centre during the rainy season, but he would place old newspapers on the car mats so that they don’t get muddy.
