A lady came back home in my village from Mombasa in the early 90’s. The first case in the village. Villagers used to throng the homestead to see for themselves an AIDS victim in the pretext of visiting her kumpigia pole. She had matusi, waa. very frail but sauti bado kubwa tu. She dies a few months later.

The second one in the village, also early 90’s, died and left a list including primary school teachers, the local clinical officer, the local “borafia” (public health guy wa kuinspect slaughtered cattle) etc. Some fled the village after the exposé but the all died a few years later.

ARVs were reserved for the rich and wealthy. Hihehahe ukipata hio kitu ilikuwa ni kwa kaburi direct bila kusimama popote. Kumbuka Nyayo had mismanaged public hospitals so hata opportunistic diseases that accompany HIV/AIDS kama TB ulikuwa ukiendea dawa unapata hakuna.

Wah i don’t want to remember the stigma around HIV/AIDs in the 90s and early 2000s…
the 1st AIDs case i saw was a clinical officer in a town called Runyenjes back in the 90s… the guy was the slay king of the town… he was screwing some hottie in the residential area we lived in…

the hottie infected several other dudes… it was a string of deaths… that time being +ve was sure death, you died looking thin and frail … the look before you died was more scary than death itself.

another Doctor who had a clinic also got it and people stopped visiting his clinic… people never understood how the disease was spread.

The most dramatic i remember is a guy whose girlfriend died from AIDs and the motherfucker was shamelessly saying the whole village would go down… the fear was evident in illegal brew dens , people discussed it in low tones while working in the farms and in the local market.

many people died, married and un-married , even the sub-area officer and several pastors…

Nowadays the thickest bitches, which the lightest skin and fattest ass ndo wako na ugonjwa.
