Advise to a friend

I have this childhood friend who was a B student (did not qualify), but did not manage to go to campus while me and my agemates were going to campus. Now he is 26 years old, and since he has saved up some cash, he asked me whether it would still make sense to sign up for a degree program. He is torn between pursuing a degree and starting his own business. The program will set him back over 400k in 3-4 years, and it will consume most of his time (studying). He also worries he might not fit in due to his age. Lastly, knowing how people tarmac even with degrees, he is reluctant to risk. What should he do…i.e start a side hustle and when it picks, he quits his job to run it…or go for the degree??? Personally nimemwambia anunue assets/shamba na shares (because business is harder than he thinks), aendelee kufanya kazi, na awachane na degree (too late at that age). What do you think?

Invest in business, education is over rated anyway

26 is very young…and with education you can never go wrong. Why cant he do both…use 100K to pay first year fees and the other 300 to start a small business

He is 26, so he will complete the degree when he is 30 years…he obviously cant fit in with 18 year olds…dont you think?? Also, consider that businesses fail most of the time…and if he follows your advise, he will have to quit his current job. In that case, if the business fails, he will lose it all i.e cant pay fees, and no job. I think all his options have to accommodate his current job to eliminate the risk of going broke. So he can either keep his job and pursue his degree, or keep his job and start a side hustle.

how now? campus si kama high school mwalimu angekuchapa. Nobody gives a fuck about your age. Akienda tri sem, in 3 years he will be done

M2Random am assuming you are a graduate. Do you honestly believe that a 26 year old should not be sitting in a lecture hall? And haven’t you heard of evening classes?I started my masters at 26 and some of my colleagues were in their 30s and 40s but there was nothing odd. Besides I had a 9- 5 job and still had another small biz on the side…and that was 6 years ago. Stop the excuses and let the dude do his degree now…he will need it soon, uliza akina sonko na Joho

You have a point…but you fail to realize the risk in running a new business. Your option is not feasible because it would force him to quit his job. If he takes your advice, he can pursue his education and keep his job…but forget about the side hustle. Do not compare masters with an undergraduate course…kwa masters watu wengi ni wazee sana. But undergrad there is some pressure because almost all students are the same age…ukiwa 26 and all classmates are 18, you will stand out

My advise?.. Biashara huanguka, gari inapata accident bila insurance, hao huchomeka, bibi hutoroka…mtu hukufa na elimu yake but education does not rot…can not be stolen or expire…never grows old…You don’t necessarily study to be employed. Hit2Birds with1Stone… Start a small biz (I can help you do one on internet…won’t mind having a partner)…& go to Campus (Try part time to have time for your business and for study…don’t mind how long it will take to finish your degree…remain focussed)…By the way…start a business that aligns with your passion…choose a degree that will help you in developing your biz…e.g…an Electric shop/Manufacture…study Bsc -Electrical Engineering etc. In box me at [email protected] for more. Good Luck in all your endeavours.

M2Randoms mind is already made up…seems hataki mambo na masomo.sad

One point to consider is what kind of education he’s after. Some can make you in-demand more than others.

Also, it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. He can do part-time studies, even online, depending on his time allowance, while working or doing business. In some kinds of fields, the knowledge that you have is more important than how you got it, degree or otherwise.

Pls tell your friend to go to school. By the time he will be 52 (26*2) he will have a sharp brain and a business.

Exactly…it appears that his best move is to go to school…and keep his current job. Side hustle aanze akimaliza degree.

So far, the best advice here is that he goes to school (evening classes), and keeps his 9-5 job. He cant have all the three i.e school, job and side hustle…and ditching his current job is too risky. I will advise him to pursue the degree (evening classes) and keep his 8-5…biashara asahau…he buys plots etc with any extra coin. @Female Perspective /Mifupaspective…I am 25 he is 26…we are agemates

In most places to be promoted to the next level, a masters degree is a basic requirement.
