A police woman's experience with GBV

Copied

In regards to GBV (Gender-Based Violence), let me say this from my own experience: sometimes, if you don’t have a parent like Mike Sonko:heart:, a brother, or anyone to defend you—you learn to stand up for yourself.:flexed_biceps:

People will easily say, “Go report to the police :police_officer:”, but let me be honest—reporting didn’t help me, and I was a police officer working in the very same station. If I, an officer inside the system, was not protected, imagine how many ordinary women go unheard.:smiling_face_with_sunglasses::smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

I experienced abuse while staying at the police lines. We had disagreements at home, and to make things worse, my then OCS was constantly sending me inappropriate messages. I was young and in love:smiling_face_with_three_hearts:, so I confided in my partner and even forwarded those messages to him, silly:joy::joy::joy:. But whenever we had problems, he would mock me and tell me to “go to my boss.”

One day, I finally talked back. I was small, naïve, and didn’t expect what happened next—he grabbed me by the neck. I bit his hand just to break free. He chased me around the station, and not a single person came to my rescue. I remember running in circles like ten laps, terrified, until I entered into one of the officers House and grabbed an Ak 47 . That is when they suddenly decided to talk to me and say, “Calm down.” lol😂

I was later transferred to Nairobi, but the same cycle kept repeating. I made several entries in the OB at Central Police Station, but I was told, “Those are family matters, not police cases.”

Just imagine that: a police officer, reporting GBV at her own station, being told it’s a family matter. Yooo:smirking_face::smirking_face::smirking_face:

I reached a point where my mind whispered, “why don’t you shoot him so that it can become a police case?" Shindweee:rofl::rofl::rofl:While some were praying for their marriages to work, I was praying that God helps me leave my marriage without losing my life or taking someone else’s.

God came through for me. I am free today. :folded_hands:

So when I say this, I say it from a place of truth and survival:

POLICE WILL NOT ALWAYS HELP YOU IN GBV SITUATIONS. If you can, STAND TALL AND RUN. Your life is more important than a title, a ring, or public opinion.

N/B

*GBV is real. It kills dreams, confidence, and lives.
*No one should be ignored when they are seeking safety — not civilians, not officers, not anyone.
*May every survivor find healing and every victim find a safe way out.
