US states not taking chances: hard lessons from Italy

In Maryland, all bars, restaurants, theaters, casinos and gyms have been closed indefinitely. Many other retail stores have also closed voluntarily. In Montgomery county, public (county) buses are offering free rides, but all passenger must board/exit through the rear doors to limit contact with the drivers.
During the state of emergency, utility companies can not disconnect services for unpaid bills, and they can’t charge late fees for overdue bills. Some internet providers (mainly Verizon and AT&T have scrapped data caps). Many schools (though closed indefinitely) are providing up to three free meals a day to cater for low income families.
So far, the state has recorded 37 cases, three fully recovered and NO deaths (thumbs up!). Even will all those great efforts, the number is expected to go up, and the state has made plans to allocate more than 6000 extra hospital beds.
Neighboring state of Virginia has so far reported 51 cases and 2 deaths. D.C has reported 17 cases and no deaths. All dining-in restaurants and night clubs are also closed in the District, and trains are running on limited schedules to allow enough time for sanitization.
A lot of people are definitely going to face tough financial situations, but I believe that the sacrifices are well worth it. Bora uhai!

Many people will go bankrupt and homeless in US.Imagine doing two/three jobs per day to survive halafu abruptly you are told to stay at home with no work

I think there’s going to be a national lockdown this week. Thoughts?

Great response, finally handling this thing with the seriousness it requires. It’s hard to imagine that a few days ago Mr trumpf was dismissing this like a non-issue. How times change. Lessons from Italy.

Trump already issue a warning. Requesting people to quarantine themselves voluntarily to curb the spread.

V Good stuff. Our dear leader has refused to shut down schools, quite why I don’t know and they are soon going to break for easter hols. Parents are up in arms. Most Unis have closed and tsk tsk some have refused to send the students home. A whole mess I tell you. The medical ones who live in my building told me they are planning to invite their fellow international students to their homes as they can’t fly out to their respective countries!

A quick glance at what BoJo and his Chief Scientific Adviser have advised…mmmh don’t know what to make of it.

I am pretty sure the Govt will financially support those that cannot work from home due to the nature of their jobs but still have to self quarantine.
All Govt employees i.e civil servants do work from home anyway, …mandatory since the Govt does not have enough offices.

It’s about time. It’s a major disaster; most folks understand the gravity of the situation.

Quite possible, but, under a state of emergency, consumers have greater legal protection (in most states) and can’t be evicted for failing to pay rent. Business owners/landlords will have to claim business losses when they file their taxes next year.
