This is huge :Trump blacklists Xiaomi

With six days left in office, the Trump administration has decided to put one more Chinese electronics giant in its sights: Xiaomi, the world’s number three phone manufacturer. The US Department of Defense is now designating Xiaomi as a “Chinese Communist military company,” meaning it’s now vulnerable to Trump’s executive order that bans the US from investing in such companies — and might force US companies and other US investors to divest in Xiaomi on November 11th, 2021, as reported by Reuters.

While a Biden administration might overturn the order before then, it’s interesting to see an electronics company like Xiaomi on the list at all. Most of the other companies on the list are more industrially oriented, specializing in aviation, aerospace, shipbuilding, chemicals, telecommunications, construction, and other forms of infrastructure. Huawei, the world’s number two phonemaker, is also on the list, but Huawei builds large-scale telecommunications equipment too; US lawmakers have been specifically worried about Huawei being part of the nation’s cellular infrastructure (also see: ZTE).

This list isn’t the same as the US Commerce Department’s “entity list,” by the way, which typically keeps US companies from exporting technology to companies that have been blacklisted, like dronemaker DJI. But some Chinese companies like Huawei (and Chinese chipmaker SMIC) are on both lists now.

Speaking of the Commerce Department, it’s moving ahead to try to block six entire countries, now designated as “foreign adversaries,” from providing communications equipment to the United States at all, including China, Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, and the government of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro.

Xiaomi didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Last kicks of a dying horse. Siku ngapi atoke?

At this rate Trump may end up blacklisting is own darn ass.

FISKED

It’s not like Xiaomi had a presence in US anyway. Market yao ni China na 3rd world. Volume strategy

Technology standards are very important…
But the US is endangering this by pushing China to develop their own standards in order to compete.
A competitor to:
Google,
Facebook,
AMD,
Intel,
Though slow, it will happen.
And the US will surely lose it’s edge in the World stage.

But they use american chipsets and android os

I don’t think Biden will overturn the order anyway. He’s only interested in making peace with American allies Europe and Australia for a string NATO to counter Russia and China.

Trump protecting Americans even with 5 days left.

You get it. These restrictions and designations are counter productive in the long run as they drive China to be self sufficient in tech.

Once Chinese have their own semiconductors, they will create their own ecosystems and hardware that will be uninteroperable with America’s.

Na vile unajua chinku hu operate in any market they corner , they will flood the world with cheap gear and drive American companies out of business.

We’ll be having a very different conversation 10 years from now.

shida ya china ni censorship mob. they have their own versions of google ,fb etc but they won’t make in the the open world .

Ummm 4 years later we are still waiting for a Chinese O.S wachana na chips hizo tunajua China hawatoboi, O.S ndio tunangoja!

It can never happen by virtue of the fact that the rest of the world will
A. Reject Chinese tech because they align with the West
B. Security fears.
Already China has competitors to
Google-Baidu
Facebook-WeChat
Intel-SMIC
But in case you have not noticed, few outside of China use those products because no one wants to use censored platforms like Baidu, QQ and Weibo or have their technology held hostage by the CCP or spied upon for the purpose of blackmail and sabotage as China has been doing the past years.
Thirdly, China is not an inventor. It can innovate, Yes, but we have had zero Chinese inventions since the Ming Dynasty. The CCP opposes anyone who is a radical thinker because radical thinkers tend to challenge authoritarianism. That is why they force Western companies to share their technology with Chinese companies in exchange for market share. Then they improve on those products, but never make anything radically new and unique.

As the US decouples from China, it will eventually become another Japan to some extent. Once a major pioneer in areas like electronics but alas! No more.
There is one way China can gain American technology by proxy, but the US is now closing that loophole while in turn threatening a war between China and the US. That loophole is Taiwan. A nation with full access to US technology with Companies like TSMC having exclusive contracts to manufacture on behalf of the likes of Intel, Apple and Qualcomm whole doing a lot of that manufacturing in China. This has long allowed American tech to ‘leak’ into China.
Now that Taiwan is shifting supply chains to Vietnam, India and Mexico, China will no longer have such access, unless it invades Taiwan that is.
And BTW, Biden will not undo the Trump blacklist. He dislikes China just as much as Trump, mainly as a way of woeing the White working class away from Republicans and also because even his mentor, Obama was already doing what Trump accelerated before he left office.
